Wood, for Spring
Well I've definately noticed a pattern the last couple of years(since I've really been looking for one) That is that once the Ice is off the water, the fish relate specifically to wood/laydowns/brush piles. I realize they like these spots year around, however since ther vegetation hasn't grown yet, therefor the best cover I've found is the wood. This is based on the fish moving up shallower, not the deep patterns. Those are the ones I can't seem to get a hold of. I would fish the wood from top to bottom, and then try another bait. The Bass are keying on the wood so you should be also. This isn't some revelation, just soem basic info for a few beginners, I assume most of the experienced anglers would already know this info. Anyway go catch a Hawg.

Re: Wood, for Spring
Just in case anyone is wondering. Â*There are 2 reasons why bass hang to wood and brush during this time of year.
1. Â*It is a good cover, and we all know that bass love cover. 2. Â*The wood, because of the sun beaming down on it, tends to heat up faster and hold heat better than other cover. Â*The bass hang around the wood because it provides a warm area. I'm sure there are more reason, but these are the 2 reasons that I have heard the most about. |

Bob, it is tough to beat a jig-n-pig in a brushpile, but a tube, worm, lizard-just about anything that won't get hung up is good.
For standing timber a jig-n-pig is a good choice, but I really like banging a spinnerbait or crankbait off them. |

Thanks Reb. Do you know how to keep from losing a crankbait from getting hung=up or snagged on wood?

Re: Wood, for Spring
Bob-the best way I have found is if you feel like you are getting hung up to stop reeling and give it a little slack. A lot of times if it is a floating crankbait it will float up and away from the snag and you can start your retrieve again. That said I always keep a lure retriever/plug knocker handy ;D.
The lure you use can also make a difference, or rather the shape of the lip can make a difference. A square lipped bait comes through cover better than a round lip because the square lip deflects off objects better than round. While most square lipped baits are shallow runners there are a few coffin-shape lipped baits that run deep and a couple of deep runners designed for brush, like a Timber Tiger-I think that is the name. |
