Re: backing a trailer
To my big surprise it only took my son and my wife about 4 tries. That is because they seen me do it at every tournys that I go to, and also asking me a lot of question. Even though owing a chevy avalanche makes it a little easy.

Re: backing a trailer
i agree bassintom, i am the only person to ever back my boat down the ramp.
I also think that there are many people that couldn't get there boat in the lake if there life depended on it. At my local lake the ramp is wide enough for 2 large boats, i watched a guy that tried about 10 times to back his jon boat down the ramp. it was so funny. I can usually get my boat backed down the ramp and unloaded in about a minute. im about the fastest around. I unhook everything first so you just back and hit the breaks and it slides right off. ( with my wife holding the rope ofcourse) I let her run the boat on the trailer at the end of the trip. |

Re: backing a trailer
i get my boat ready before i back up to the ramp, only the winch strap is on.i have a 40ft rope with snap hooks on both ends, hook one end to the boat other end to the trailer.back it in,bump it,the boat goes out ,i get out of the truck unhook from the trailer and pull the boat to dock, beach, whatever.takes about 2 minutes and i'm off the ramp.i see these guys back down to the ramp then start getting their boat ready, tying up the ramp forever.

Re: backing a trailer
Sandy and I fished a pick-up tournament once on the Pamunkey River. Â*She was the only woman in this shindig, and I could hear the guy's "Watch this. Â*That woman is going to back that trailer in". Â*Well, she dropped that Javelin in the water slick as can be. Â*(You have to back to this ramp at about a 45) Â*They really stopped laughing when we came in with a limit of fish.
How long did it take her? Â*Oh, a couple of trips is all. Â*No longer than it did me I don't guess. Â*As a matter of fact, she can probably do it better than I can now, since she does it all the time..\ |

Re: backing a trailer
Hey there CAJUNBASS. My wife name is also SANDY, boy are we the lucky ones. The way I load and unload my boat is by driving off and driving on much faster both ways, especialy if your trailer has bunks. That way you do not tie up the ramp for too long.

Re: backing a trailer
No matter who is learning to back a trailer, your mother, you or your son, practice in a big empty parking lot, not the boat landing. The lack of pressure makes learning much easier and a lot more fun for all involved.

Re: backing a trailer
Great advice, Hen3ry!
I back it up myself-usually have by buddy in the boat and roll down the ramp and as soon as it is deep enough hit the brakes and it slides right in. I always get it ready before backing and a minute or 2 and I'm off the ramp. |

Re: backing a trailer
We underestimate the capabilities a women carries with out having to glorify everything as a great accomplishment as we men sometimes do. ;D Alright more than sometimes. I am a welding instructor and the women are easier to teach than men are,of course this isn't how the other guys see it, they think I spend my time trying to hit on the women rather than waste my time teaching a women to weld or hang out with their foul mouthed goat smelling carcasses. ;D That is probably why they don't get to teach them to weld. Re: backing a trailer
It was the same when I was teaching Sandy to fish PNJ. She picked up on stuff a lot faster than the guys in my club ever did, because she admitted from the start she didn't know a thing. Same thing when I used to teach women how to shoot a pistol. Every man who ever saw a John Wayne movie, KNOWS everything there is to know about shooting. Don't try to tell him anything.
