I leave mine up with a transom saver on it. Haven't really heard anything pro or con about if the motor should be up or down.

A lot of it depends on time of year and where you live. If you live where you may get a lot of freezing weather during the winter months, they say that putting the motor in its full down position allows the remaining water to drain better, thereby keeping it from freezing and damaging the motor.

I live in south Texas. It just doesn't get that cold here and I have always left mine up with a transom saver like Reb and I have never had a problem.

If it's cold, let it down. It it's not, it don't matter.

In cold weather, even if you know it's drained, trim it down. Rain or snow can get in there and freeze if it's left up.

MIKE,

I guess I should have expounded on my answer, instead of just one word. The reason I run my motor down is to take the pressure off the seals in the lift cylinders. It may not make any difference, but I feel that leaving the pressure on them may lead to premature leak-down problems.

My motor has a flip down metal peice that holds it up during trailering and storage which takes the pressure off of the cylinders. The pistons even retract into the cylinder housing so they won't be exposed to the elements. It's great.

I read that you are always supposed to leave a 4 stroke down because the oil will settle in one place of the engine if you leave it up which will eventually hurt the engine
