Small Pond Fishing
I am fishing a small pond, and water temp. is still cold. I went today and located some and caught a small measly 6 inch bass, but couldn't catch the big ones. I was using a 4 1/2 inch cheap Wal-mart worm in a weightless texas rig style, and was getting hits but no bites. I was using an eagle claw 3/0 size worm hook.
Any tips??? |

rr, where do you live, put your location in your signature. Give a description of the ponds, are there rocks, dropoffs, weeds? Is the water stained, muddy, or clear?

I live in Northern Ohio. Water clarity is somewhat murky.

Re: Small Pond Fishing
dont use those wal-mart worms they are just about as good as gulp IMO. use small spinnerbaits like booyah makes. i like chartruse color. also redshad worms. either 4.5'' or 7.5'' both work well for me. use everything slow. also jig around any timber. or just about any cover. also, is there a bunch of cover in the pond? the ponds i fish really have no cover what so ever, so fish parallel to the shore. also fish deeper. and if you come across any cover, and i mean any(i.e. a small patch of liily pads or grass, surrounded by no other cover) fish it. more then likely, there will be atleast 1 bass holding to it. that pretty much covers it. have fun.

I fish ponds with no cover like bassfisher and for some reason, I have caught all of the fish i have in these ponds with a 3/8 oz. bass pro lazer eye spinnerbait tandern. Baitfish/ shad color. I have tried pond magic(booyah) and everything and nothing else works. But your in ohio so youre out of my league there. Just letting you know how were doing in the south.

Re: Small Pond Fishing
rrw, don't feel bad about a small bass-I fought the wind all morning and got one not much bigger than yours. Set the hook on a couple of trees, though. They pulled back-honest ;D!
Your hook may be a little too big for that bait-for a small bait like that I'd use a 1/0. The short strikes you were getting might have been bluegill-they are notorious for nipping at the tail of a small worm. |

Re: Small Pond Fishing
try finding out the forage in the pond and match it..small ponds aren't gonna hold the same forage as larger lakes and reserviors....a bubblegum or merthiolate trick worm might work once the water warms..

Re: Small Pond Fishing
Dont be afraid to still try the deep water that's where I
got my bass.I was throwing a blue and chrome lipless crankbait and throwing a Spinnerbait(chartruse) over timber. The bass I caught where just a the point where the deep meets the shallow...two them anyway and the one on the timber. If your in Norhtern Ohio you still have a small wait....but it is on its way ;D. Goodluck and take care Denny also Berkley makes great plastics,Gene Larew,Gary Yamamoto,Zoom, Stike King......ect But please dont use Wally plastics..... |

Re: Small Pond Fishing
Try a rooster tail, small spinnerbait, small cranks. Catch a few 'small' ones to get your frustrations out of the way, then you can go after the big boys...if there are any :

Re: Small Pond Fishing
try using a bigger worm like a 7 inch straight tail something in a more natural color. texas rigg it using a 4/0 hook. toss that bad boy pretty far and slowly work it back, try this number bounce bounce sit bounce sit then reel, repeat.

Re: Small Pond Fishing
I use a spinnerbait most of the time and do pretty well. The small lake that we fish in has a lot of hydrilla and the bass tend to be around that area. We sometimes run into alot of crappie while bass fishing and anchor out and catch them until they stop biting.
