Default Scum Frogs and Rats

I'm trying to get better at fishing the matted vegitation and I was wondering what were some of the better rats out there on the market. Yesterday I fished a little with a no-name brand that had 3 hooks in the rear, didn't like it cause the bottom hook tended to pick up milfoil. Is there a standard retrieve, or is it more varied day to day?

I'm not sure which brand makes this, but I use a Scummaster. It only has 2 hooks which are curved up over the body, which is soft pastic and hollow, and instead of feet, it has strips of soft plastic trailing behind it. I've had some success with this lure, but the hooks aren't very sharp and I don't have the willpower to wait til I feel the fish before setting the hook.

Scum frogs and other frogs are notorios for bad hook ups, but there is a frog callled the Sumo frog that is supposed to have a special angle on the hooks( or something like that) so it has a much better hooking percentage than regualer frogs, but is still completelty weedless. Its used by western pros. The only problem is they are pricey(6$) and only one place that I know of sells them, and they're usaully sold out or on backorder because of demand. Heres the link.

WTL, I fish the Strike King Rat. I have had 3 3-4lb fish hit this lure. I have had no hookup though. I drag it in inches across the floating slop. I use a white one, for early morn, but would go black or green during the day. Also, I have no tips on frog, but I am buying 2 at cabelas.

Since most of the time the bass never sees the frog from under the mat, its just a matter of a good hookset.

Snagproof frogs and mice work well and are very affordable. You can pick up at any local walmart. Of course if you have some local mom n pop tackle shops, check and see if they sell them. Always support them if possible.

I like the way the scum frog collapses easy on the hookset, I have had a tournament frog for years , either with the legs or two spinnerbait skirts for legs.

Denny is the most deadliest guy on the frog I have ever seen. He hardley ever misses
With me, 9 out of 10 times the stupid bass misses the frog and some real frog
always ends up hopping over to my artificial one and tries to mate with it LOL
Ya ever notice those pond frogs never get hit on while they are checking out your fake one? whats the deal??

I favor the Tournament Frog made by Snag proof over any other frog or rat.
It comes with skirted legs. One thing I always do is clip them off then take a lighter and burn the holes to keep water from getting in. This simple modification results in less missed strikes and short hits.
I like the darker colors, the blue, black, and brown.
My standard retrieve is a swimming bobbing motion and a pause between every few cranks of the handle. If I have found a wad of fish I tend to use a slower retrieve. When a fish hits and misses letting it sit there and barely twitching it amost always results in an immediate second strike.

anybody hear of a "kermit the frog" that is having sucess on the tournament? I've just heard about it, asked a few local bait shops and they've never heard of it (of course everybody in my town seems a few years behind the times). Could it be the zoom horney toad, or some other frog bait?

Yes I've also used the frog on the link guacomole gave. It works great. I also modify it the same way.

I appreciate all the info yall, I will pick up some of those kermits - as soon as the next paycheck clears! Might get a few of the cheaper ones before that.

As another question on the subject, what do you look for in selecting which mats to fish? How thick should it be, and can bass get a good strike through the really thick stuff?

Look for the greenest liveliest milfoil you can find. Avoid hydrilla. Its too thick for them to blow up on it. You want it thick on top but not real thick underneath. If it is solid underneath its hard for them to see it and home in on it good.
