opinions on baitcasting brakes

I was wondering about anybodys opinion on different kinds of brakes on baitcasting reels. Your experience as to ease of use and any advantages. Thanks

until you get an educated thumb rely on the brakes to prevent over runs and back lashes. I use some very smooth reels, Scorpions and Antarez and I no longer use the VBS that comes on them. I let my thumb handle it.

I always liked the magnetic brakes, but the centrifugal brakes work fine, although having to take the side plate off to set them is a little bit of a pain. Truth be told the kind of brake really doesn't matter to me-like earthworm said, your thumb is the best brake there is.

I do not like the magnetic brakes. Never have, never will. I like the centrifugal brakes or VBS. Though I usually only keep 2 engaged. Train the thumb, as they said. Best brake available.

BassinBob, I prefer the magnetic brake system from the Daiwa reels. Nothing work as well as they do for quick adjustment. They are pretty noticable between the different settings.I do not like most centrifugal weights ,they work but most problems occur when the person tries to change many different lure weights without changing the centrifugal weights in the reel.The new Bass pro shop system seems to work very well also. I use the magnetic for the same reason Rebasser said. It's just too much of a pain to take the side cover off and adjust it. I just recently got into baitcasting but i love them.

I have only been fishing a couple of years. But I have found that peeling out a few yards of line depending if flipping or casting and placeing a piece of tape on the spool. I will do this in unfavourable conditions such as windy conditions. So if I have a backlash it is very minimal as the tape will stop the spool from overrunning.

I do the same thing as ripper use some black tape. to prevent the backlashes and use your thumb as the break. once I got my thumb trained the back-lashes are minimal.
does everybody still get back-lashes??>> :-/

If you are referring to the pros, Im sure they still get them. The difference Im sure you will never see it on TV. In a tourney they probably just throw the pole down and pick up another one and keep on going. 8)

Quantum reels with the externally adjustable centrifugal breaks.

Imho, Quantum has it down to a science. The adjustable brake on the side, means no removing the side plate to screw around with the brakes. Three settings plus free spool. It's tough to feather the reel with your thumb in free spool mode.

flfireman your probably right. i'f i had 40 pole's in the boat make'n that kind of money i would through it down get a new one too. ya can't look good to your sponsers if digin in your butt (gutt'n out a back lash) ya know what i'm saying
