Default Found an old reel on the bank today...

I'm under no illusions that this thing is worth any money (or is worth using), I'm just kinda curious as to the age - its an old lew childre mag spool BB - 1M and it was attatched to a lews lazer graphite speed stick (which is usable). I'm thinking late 80s maybe here, what do yall think?

WTL,Late 70's, early 80's for the BB-1LM. There should be a L in there, for Low profile Magnetic cast control.Gammarama just bought the one I had, They are a nice reel, Lew Childre was way advanced over any other reel maker until he was killed in a accident.I can't remember the details, but he made some really nice reels. Yep. He made the first low profile reels in the late 70's early 80's. Lew's Speed Stick was THE rod back then.

Thats pretty cool. There is no L for low profile on the reel body, but it does have the distinct Lews shape. I almost think that if I replaced the spool and cleaned it up real good it would be usable, probably not worth the money but I think it could be done. Thats interesting if that thing was sitting on the bottom of a on-campus pond for 20 years, only to be uncovered in 2005.

I'm gonna give my Dad the Speed Stick. He still uses the older Speed Sticks, they arent graphite I don't think. Maybe his tackle can be said to have enetered the 80s. Then again, he will never get rid of his 1970s Daiwa Millionare or Garcia 5000C.

Lew was killed in a plane accident in 1977 at age 49.
