Fish weight formula

i need some help on something. my buddy and i went fishing lastnight and he caught a nice bass (for around here). and i couldn't find my scales to weigh it. and i have heard about a formula where you measure the girth and lenght and it will get you close, anybody know what i am talking about and if so what is it? by the weigh i am guessing that the fish was about 4.5 lbs but this time of year it is hard to tell, and i have been fooled a lot. Â*anyways i appreciate any help i can get...

it was 20 inches long and 15 in girth... like i said i guess it to be close to 4.5 lbs...keep in mind that i wouldn't go through all of this for a 4 lb bass but my buddy has just got into fishing this year and it is his first nice bass and he is pumped up. lol just don't want anybody to think i am a novice that goes nuts over any descent bass i see.

the bass weighed 5lbs...but that site kinda ups the weight(the formula is just a bit funky...but i think it gives the around the right weight)....so you were most likely dead on!! i bet everybody that looked at this after you changed the name thought i was nuts ;D i had to modify my post to keep from people thinkin im insane ;D

lol...yeah i didn't change it i don't know what happened but at least it got one response. but thanks for the help and i will tell my buddy that we were close at 4.5 lbs.

The formula that's probably the most widely used would yield a weight of exactly five pounds:

LxLxG÷1200

yeah i don't know, and how close is something like that anyways, i always heard it would be close but i would think that just like humans some fish would be fatter and some more muscular and that would probably throw you off but you guys gave me what i asked for and i appreciate it.

well thats why you measure the girth.....that will tell how round it is....and the length from lower jaw to tail would be its length.....i dont see where the othere length comes in?

well i think he meant that in the formula you take the length times itself, not sure though because i see what you are saying.

The only problem is some use 800 and some use 1200 as the number to divide by. Not sure which one is correct.

Reb, the 1200 one is LxLxG and the 800 one is LxGxG. Not sure if either one is reliable, but those are the two that I see the most.

the one NJ posted says it weight 4lb 14oz...so either one works....
