Default Help me pick out a baitcaster!!

I am looking for a good bait caster that I can throw lite baits with (like 5 inch senkos with no weights or small worms with 1/8 oz. weights).

Have any of you had any luck with bait casters for this application or do most of you use spinning tackle?

Depending on how much you want or have to spend, I'd say go with a Shimano, or Diawa, or even a Quantum. There's so many makes and models, just like cars. I use Shimano's and feel they are excellent reels for performance and durability. My favorite is the Shimano Curado. Shop around though, and read up on all the brand names, you will find that most of them are similar in design and cost. I can throw weightless senko's with ease on my Shimano. Good Luck.

i have a worm rod i bought from wally world.it was $65.it is a qauntum tournament grade baitcast rod and reel combo.the reel is very smooth and has 4 ball bearings.the rod is IM8,which is very strong and very sensative. i put 15lb trilene big game on it and it will cast a 1/8 ounce worm about 18-20yards.overall,it is very good for the price.look at every walmart near you and try to find it.good luck!

The Daiwa Viento is mighty nice, with the twitchin' bar. I used my friends, and it was great. I believe bps sells them for about 200.

get a pflueger president or supreme.both are excellent reels that are as good as anything on the market and cost less than a lot of reels.here's a tackle tour review of the president.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have several baitcasters already including 2 curados. I just have not had much luck throwing a weightless senko with any baitcaster before. Thought maybe some of the new smaller baitcasters might work for my needs.

Use a spinning reel, it will work much better (As he ducks and gets missed by the barrage of negative responses he's getting hurled at him )

For the aplications you are describing i use a shimano chronarch100mg IMO it cant be beaten for light lures and weightless soft plastics but it is on the pricy side at $250 but it is worth it.

if you cant throw a 5" senko on a curado then you need to work on your casting technique, adjust the brakes the correct way, to heavy of line or you are using to stiff of a rod. i use a 7' med. fast st croix priemer and a quatum accurist reel with #12 suffix and i can cast 4" weightless senkos a good ways and the 5" a mile so look over what is wrong before you go out and buy something new

Default weightless plastics

Ill-Bass,
I routinely cast weightless senkos with my Daiwas. I have various rods/reels I use for 3" weightless senkos, 4" weighless senkos, 1/16 oz jigheads with 2" twister tails, 1/16 oz swimming jigs without trailer, #0 Mepps, 1/16 oz tiny crankbaits, etc. The accuracy you can get with a baitcaster and no line twist makes them great for finesse applications. Although the higher end Daiwa models are a little expensive, their performance is superb.

I agree, a 5" senko should not be a problem for any decent reel. If you are having a problem, first look at the reel, as already suggested. If you are still having a problem, then I would suspect the rod doesn't have the ideal action for this presentation. I've found the faster action bait casting rods tend to cast lighter weighted lures much further and more accurately than slower action rods. You'll also get a lower trajectory during the cast with an extra fast action baticasting rod, and in general, more sensitivity too.

Chuck

BPS Extreme, best baitcaster I've ever used for really light baits.

If you want the best bang for your buck, get the Revo SX or STX, 6.4 (high speed is 7.1) 11 bearings with infinispool. The sucker will cast a mile.
