What does this mean....
What does it mean when describing the action of the rod, it has a fast action or a moderate action? I am looking at some rods in Cabela's and they aren't described the same as BPS.

Re: What does this mean....
Its confusing but a fast action is a stiff rod and a slow action is a limber one. It seems it should be the other way around but its not.

Re: What does this mean....
Well not just that, but that is kinda related.
I understand it to mean that a fast tipped rod bends most towards the tip, whearas a slow tipped rod has a more gradual bend. Just assume that you try to pick up a 1 pound weight using a fast rod, what you will see is the rod is very stiff for most of the blank, but maybe 16 inches to a foot from the tip is where it tends to curve. If you repeated the same experiment with a slow rod the curve would be more gradual (hence slow) and it would be distributed along the length of the rod. I hope I explained that well! ;D :-/ |

Re: What does this mean....
Action refers to the way the rod bends when under a load. (I have never understood why 99% of this industry uses the word "action" when describing power).
A guide to action that I saw in a Cabela's catalog years ago describes it thusly: Extra fast means most of the bend occurs in the upper 25% of the rod. Fast, 33%, moderate, 50%, and slow, the bend goes into the butt section. Hope this helps. |

Re: What does this mean....
What marty said is accurate, or at least his cabbela's catalogue was. Power and action aren't the same things. Power is more to do with how much stress you can put on the rod and how well you can controll the load that is put on it. The weight ratings like "light" "med" "mdhvy" that is the power of the rod.
