you might just want totwitch it some while their following or let it fall for a second. The erratic motion could just draw a strike.

I might try changing colors too if the change in action don't work. Also the speed may be a factor. There are alot of things to try, till you find what that edge they are looking for is.

Put on a trailer if you don't have one. I prefer a single paddle tailed grub, brand doesn't matter to me much on the trailers, just a good paddle tail action.

actually it is a combination of those things slow your retrive down ajust position of rod to about 9-10 oclock. and a grub and here is something that works for me add scent. just a bit of shad flavoring on the skirt and grub. there will not be any chassing about it they WILL nail it.

You may or may not be doing something wrong. All we know for sure is what you were doing was enough to ATTRACT the fish, but not enough to TRIGGER a strike.

It could be speed, color, cadence, odor, or something else. I'd follow Chris' advice, below:

Like was said above, you know you are doing something well enough to make one look at it. If I am fishing with a spinnerbait, and find that the fish are hitting it short, or following it back without hitting it, the first thing I do is slow down the bait I am throwing. The fish are already taking notice, so try slowing it down and letting them have it. If this doesn't trigger a strike or two, then try the same technique but vary your retrieve. Stop it, jerk it, try to get a reaction strike. If this doesn't work, downsize your bait, and try everything above. Adding a plastic trailer to your spinnerbait when fish are biting short or following your bait will definitely make them shy away. It presents a bigger profile in the water to already spooky bass. I wouldn't even try a trailer hook in this situation. Also, try throwing a small tube, or small worm, back at some of the fish that at missing your spinnerbait. Good fishing

I agree with mtbassman - have a "follow up lure" ready. I always have one handy if I am fishing topwater (buzzbaits in particular) or spinnerbaits. I usually use Senkos or finesse worms as my follow up bait. The suggestions above regarding changing pace/scent/color are all good suggestions as well.

If I get followers on the spinnerbait, I like to slow the retrieve and then speed it up to make the lure look like it's trying to get away.
