I recently got a boat, and was wondering what type of battery i should use for my trolling motor. dual purpose or deep cycle? and what brand do you all recommend?

same question for humminbird depth/fish finder

I connect my fishfinder into the cranking battery, which also has the lights and bilge pump on it. I use a cranking battery for that purpose, your charger on your outboard should keep it chaged up plenty all year long. As for the trolling motor, I've had the best luck with the Everstart Deep Cycle Trolling Battery. Haven't run out of juice on the lake yet for 2 years. I also prefer the maintenance free ones. Where you never have to add water. Too many issues with the refilling for me to care for that type anymore.

interstate deep cycle gel cells-no water to mess with. and about 1/3 the size of an standard deep cycle batteries. and work very well. had mine for 3 years.
i have only one depth finder hooked up to the crank battery.

i would use a deep cycle for the troller not a dual purpose-deep cycle have a longer run time pre charge.

as for a humming bird -said this before will say it again- latch on to it and chunk it straight in to the deepest part of the lake cause they are junk. go with eagle or bottom line or what ever . ya might pay a bit more but in the end it is well worth the money.

I use Everstarts from WalMart. Â*They are decent batteries, and if you have a problem regardless of where you are fishing you can usually find a WalMart close by.

The depthfinders are hooked to the cranking battery. Â*I have one on the bow with a trolling motor mount, and by having it on a different circuit than the tm eliminates interference.

One suggestion-If you can get an on-board charger that will not only charge your batteries but maintain them. That way when you get back from the lake all you need to do is plug it in and forget it. It will keep your batteries charged when you are not using the boat so they are ready to go when you are.

I have had very good luck with Cabelas AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries. They are completely sealed, so they never need water. You can turn them on thier side if necessary to mount them, they charge in about half the time of other batteries, and I have never ran them down in a day or sometimes two days of fishing between charges.
A friend of mine just installed Optima AGM batteries, which have the same qualities, however you can order them thru many auto parts stores, like Auto Zone or O'reillys.

Duracell. Spend that extra dough for the copper top. 8)

Really, everyone else probably has a better system than me - but what I have been using for the past 6 months is a deep cycle I got at autozone for the trolling motor only and then just a regular old compact car battery I had laying around for the electronics.

Zook, the only reason i got a humminbird in the first place is b/c when i was at work (moving company), i noticed that the guy who was moving had it. he said he'd never use it now that he's got a family... so he gave it to me. i don't know about you, but a free humminbird has got to be a lil better than payin 90 to 120 bucks for one :P I tried to talk him into giving me his boat too... but no luck :-/
