Default Can I bass fish with this?

Can I bass fish with a Shakespeare Microspin Ultra Light rod and a Shakespreare Microspin reel that only holds up to 6 lbs test? Can I put larger test on it? :-/ Its only 4' 6".

You can-just have to be a little careful bringing it in. I don't know if you can put heavier line-best way to find out is to try it.

yes you can. it will be one hell of a fight to, even with a 1lb bass. you can put 20lb braid on it with a 6lb diameter.

pretty much. the rod doesnt have a good strong backbone so smaller fish will feel big. and forget about crankbaits. if you want to really have some fun, only use 4-6lb test, and see if you can get him in without breaking your line. the key here is drag

well, what are you doing with it? this rod shouldnt be your main rod/reel. unless you want to UL fish all day. you should atleast have 1 nice strong rod/reel. and then work your way from there. if you have another rod/reel, then you should be fine, just use it for messin around. use it if you want a good fight with smaller fish. your baits are limited, but you still can fish with it.

I wouldn't take it back, NJ. UL can be a blast. I'd want to keep a heavier outfit handy, though.

Keep that UL setup. Everything you catch will be fun. They are a lot of fun if you wind up someplace where the fish are mostly small. I used to carry one in my golf bag when I played. I was no good at golf, but it was the only way to get access to some of those ponds!

Sure you can fish for bass with that. If you have a good knot and no weak spots in the line and a proper drag setting, you can land sizable fish with UL outfits, as long as you're in fairly open water.

Be careful about putting bigger line on that reel. One of the principles of spin fishing is that, all other things being equal, you get better line performance when using lighter lines with larger diameter spools.

So putting bigger line on a micro reel will increase chances of line problems.

NJ,
Way, way, way back when I was a whole lot younger, there was an angler that loved to fish the local creeks and rivers with an ultra lite rig and 4 lb test. One time he hooked a 20 lb flathead and landed it in just a little over an hour and a half. It can be done if you take your time and play the fish.

i know it can be done..but not by a serious bass angler.a serious microlite angler that is out to prove he can do it ,yes..but not for one minute do i believe devilboy is serious about microlite fishing...he'll use it for bluegill.
would make a neat ice rod though.

You can fish with anything you want to. Â*What's the worst thing that will happen? Â*You'll lose a fish? Â*So what? Â*You didn't have it in the first place. Â*

The world will not end. Â*The stock market will not crash. Â*Go fishing and have fun.

BTW. one thing I would suggest you practice with that outfit, and that is backreeling. I don't trust a drag on a reel period, but on a small reel with light line, I trust them even less. Learn to leave your anti-reverse OFF, and keep your drag tight. When the fish makes a run, slowly reel backwards, to give line, then forward to catch up again of course. I trust what's between my ears, a lot more than what's in the reel.

You can....set that drag loose! I've caught a lot of bass in the early spring on ultralight tackle, with both 4 and 6 lb test line...enjoy!
