Is a hot foot better than a hand controlled throttle

Re: Hot foot
Totally a matter of opinion. I don't have a big enough boat for a hot foot, so I don't own one. But I've talked to several folks who have bigger boats, and each guy likes different things. I have noticed that usually the older folks prefer the hand throttle, and the younger guys prefer the hot foot. Now this is just a basic observation. I'm guessing the older guys always used the hand throttle, so they are comfortable with them. And the younger guys have had the hot foot around, and have used them since they haven't been availble near as long as the hand throttle.

Re: Hot foot
I have looked at this post a couple of times and wasn't sure how to respond. Lizards helped. Thanks Lizards. I have been driving a boat for 20-some-odd years. I like the hand throttle. My boat is designed to take a Hot Foot, but I can't seem to justify the money (the part is cheap, $99-putting it in is expensive, about 200 more). If the water is rough, I slow down. I am old and don't want to take the beating. If I am not running 60 on 3 foot waves, what does it matter if one hand leaves the wheel for 3 seconds? I have opened my boat up twice in the time that I have owned it. Both times were smooth water conditions and huge lakes. There is no need for me to run 75 MPH on the water (yes, its scary), but I was curious. If I was going to do that a lot, the Hot Foot would make sense. I don't, so it doesn't. At least not to me.

Re: Hot foot
main reason is to get from spot to spot, hole from hole. especially in tournies.....its best to get as much fishin as you can, that means from launch to the spot you fish you want to get there fast.

Re: Hot foot
Yeah last week I went in a friend of mine's bass boat and the speedometer only went to 80 but the needle was about 1/2" past that so I think we were going abut 85. It's scary at first then exciting but my whole mouth dried out.
He also only slowed down to 50 to go over trawler waves - NOT FUN! |

Re: Hot foot
I have a small Ranger and it goes about 45 to 50. Believe me that is plenty fast for me, even in tournaments.

Re: Hot foot
Don't believe your speedo's. Radar or GPS will get you closer to the truth.
My Ranger shows 73-75 on speedo when radar and GPS indicate 65-70 depending upon load in the boat. 518 with 200 Evenrude. |

Re: Hot foot
Your speedometer is usually 3-6 mph faster than what you are really going. ine will say I am running like 68-69, when the GPS will show about 65. I like the Hot foot personally, especially in rougher water. My older fishing partner wouldn't hit a hog in the *** with a hot foot. Just a matter of opinion.

i've thought about putting a hot foot in my boat, i have the room, but i really can't justify spending much money when i need it for other things more, like a better trolling motor. I think my boat does about 65, i havent clocked it yet. the first time taking that thing was sorta scary, and i had it in waves for hte first time yesterday. really a difference between a lund that does 30 and a bass boat that goes 65.
