Default jointed shad rap

if you have used them before most of you know they move great through the water with a lot of action. but they tend to dive a tad deep about 7 feet-for me-and ya know that and original jointed rapala don't move right in shallow water. i accidently created a cure for this problem.actually i nailed a bridge butment with one and it broke the lip in front of the line tie eye. from then on i have used this lure in shallow weedy areas as it only dives 18-24". recently i cut a lip on one with a hack saw-because i can-then after a day of testing -caught a dink-i made it in to a coffin lip with a grinder. while it still moves great it will only dig 12-18"down.
i belive that this modication will greatly help during the high fishing pressure times on the local lakes. where throwing it in/and or around shallow cover and grass. where 90 percent of shad raps will not work well. besides rapala don't make a shallow diving jointed lure. but till they do i guess i will have to take a hack saw to a perfectly good -read that new-jointed shad rap.

remeber to leave about 1/8 of an inch between the end of the eye mount and were ya cut it off or ya will tear the line tie out of the bait.

zooker i noticed you use a snap and swivel. on your cranks. i know this topic has been talked about before. but do you see any difference in the action of your bait.
between that method and tieing right to the crank. with your way i sure seems alot faster than haveing to retie when you switch baits.

I thought the same thing, nobass. The cross-lock ball bearing type he is using is the only kind I would use if I was going to use one.

actually no bass one of these cross locks of that size are a royal pain to switch the crank baits quickly. i messed up and bought the ones 1 size to big -doh!-but i do a lot of suspending with cranks and the swivel lets them move better imo. as for this type swivel it is a soild ring. which wont pull a part like spilt rings will. please note this swivel was the one used in catching and landing a 42 pound blue cat fish. i did retie it 3 times since then. but that is it.

i use the duo-lock clips without a swivel.i use it on topwater, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits and the occasional crankbait.

no cull it is an illusion it was closer to the glass then the crank bait. the reason i use 1 size smaller-this is a #4 -a #5 is the hook will go through most line tie rings easier. than this one. besides opening these are a tad easier when wearing gloves.

Zooker, thanks for the post and the detailed information.
Certainly an idea that a lot of us can use.
I remember a rapalla floating minnow a pike attacked and ripped out the diving lip altogether. I used model glue to seal the lip slot and placed a little (very little) unraveled red yarn in the slot so it strung out like a bleeding minnow. Used that lure on top something like a miniature zara spook and with a very light touch could almost walk the dog with it on an ultra lite outfit. Most of the time, just casting, pausing and occasionally twitching worked the best of all.
Thanks for the post......good fishing, Mac
