Default Welcome to socialism folks!

Don't know if yall have heard, but the USSC ruled today that in cases involving eminant domain, the economic good of the public can be cause for forcing people to surrender their property.

What this means for all who own land is that their right to their land is subserviant to the anybody who claims that they can operate a business that will bring a few jobs into the community. That is where this decision eventually leads.

What this does is give business a coercive crutch - they don't need to behave according to the market - they can always appeal to the government if say walmart wants to buy a farm and the farmer doesn't want to sell. They don't need to respond to the market. The public economic good is the only right recognized. The next step is a planned economy - the government decides who runs what business where.

This is the worst decision the USSC has made in 150 years. It is blatant that they are trying to be legislators. They are the agent that has become destructive of our liberties more than any other, and they were the ones originally charged to protect them.

WTL,

* * Haven't you figured out by now that this country is headed for the dumper? It is no longer a government of the PEOPLE, it is a government of the RICH. This is the reason the RICH are pushing for gun control. They know that at the present rate of decline of the peoples rights, armed revolt is emminent.

Jack - I'm hesitant to proclaim that its the rich who are the problem. Wealth in and of its self is not a problem, nor are those who go about acquiring it through their skill.

The problem is people want to take shortcuts around hard work, skill and knowledge when trying to acquire money. Really, they don't want to make money - they want to get it. Contemplate the difference between making money and getting it and you will see the battle that is being fought. Their side is a coalition of two parties: those who have money but want more and see that the way they want to do it is by theft, and those that wish they were theives. The vehicle they use of course for this theft is the government, which has the sole power to legitimatly coerce.

On our side is those who know their inner worth and are willing to demonstrate it - we know that we don't need the help of the goverment and we don't want it - we want the government to stay away. If our type is left alone, many will and do become rich and are not a part of the problem but actually the part of what is good about America.

Has anyone ever read A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn?

It claims that the government was always like that.

In my area here, there has been talk about the direct route from Evansville to Indianapolis. It sounds all and good, but I have never understood how it is possible or legal for them to force people from their homes and property for the sake of a road. Another instance here in Henderson, the city wanted some riverfront property that was owned privately. They made an offer but the individual did not want to sell. So they went to court and took the land because it was for the "good for the community".
To have the Supreme Court rule in such a way is monumentally horrendous. Socialism is indeed in the cards and I'm afraid we as country went down that slippery slope long ago.

ARCHER,

Thomas Jefferson stood on the floor of Congress and discussed the corruption in our government (Even at that early times) and how to eliminate it. He started by saying "First we hang all the attorneys!"
That sounds like as good of a place to start as any. That would pretty well clean out all the politicians!

I heard about that it is so wrong. They better be fighting this hard because the goverment has no right to take someones private land and, sell it to a private contractor.

JORDAN,

It is too late, it has been ruled on by the Supremes, which makes it the law of the land. Congress can not override it, nor can the president.

WTL,

The problem with your theory is that when the rich become richer, they think of themselves as Gods. They have the money to acquire whatever they want through payoffs and donations to political campaigns. You did not actually believe that people donate thousands and millions of dollars to a candidate just because they are a "good" Republican or Democrat, did you? Wake up and smell the coffee.
I will agree that not all rich people are this way, but look who is on the city council, the county commissioners, the state and federal representatives. Do you know any of them that are poor or middle class? I don't think so. Wealth begats power, power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Look back at the congressman who's mistress came up missing. Is he in jail? NO He is back in California running a lucerative law firm like nothing happened. And it wont!!!

No one was happy about the September 11 bombings EXCEPT Gary Condit. It got his name and his missing mistress (Chandra Levy) out of the news in a big hurry...

Is your church on prime real estate? *If it is, you probably have trouble coming. *Churches don't pay taxes. *So, the developer comes in, tells the powers that be he can generate a lot of tax revenue, all that is needed is to move the church off it's land. *And with this ruling, they can. *The only way to correct this now is with a constitutional amendment.

Nitro, there were a few more-michael moron, moveon.org, etc.

REB,

That would take a 2/3 majority of both the House and Senate to bring it to a vote of the people. Those jerks can not even agree on a judge. (after the latest ruling on iminent domain, maybe they are better off not appointing any judges)

Why on earth is it that people are always demonizing the rich?

They have political influence. Well so does the mob - IE, the lower class. What, they try to use their influence to help better their position? So does the lower class. I'm not the one with my eyes shut Jack. The number 1 motivating factor in politics as well as the economy is personal self interest. Its what fuels every action. We will never change that, Marx was an idiot in that respect. My only problem is we have made the government big enough and powerful enough to grant these absurd requests - like farm subsidies, stadium subsidies - WELFARE! SOCIAL SECURITY (whats the chance I'll ever see a penny of that racket!?) So we have a back and forth among each class and special interest group, each jockying for more tax money - more of our money - what check is there for this? What balance? It used to be that there just wasn't the money, but after the income tax was allowed in the back door that changed forever.

I believe in the notion of a social contract Jack. That means that I have submitted to the authority of the state for the purpose of protecting me from foreign coalitions and governments (ie national security and defense), common theives and as a final arbitor in matters of contract and law. The rest as far as I'm concerned is fluff that I don't need or want, but rather am forced to deal with cause of no alternative. This country long ago overstepped its charter - the constitution - that train has left the station. But its not the rich that are to blame, or the poor or the midlings - its the entire system where we steal only to redistribute income based on who cries the loudest or has the most friends.

eminent domain was intended for highways and such. Yeah it sucks, but at least it's a legit public use. People don't always get a “handsome” price for their property though. In this case there are people with decent well-kept homes and valuable waterfront properties who were offered $60,000 for their homes. Ultimately the final offer was $150,000, but hell, an average home will cost that much in the cheapest places to live in this country. Go to a large city where property values are much higher, and a waterfront property that is wanted for construction of an office complex only merits a $150,000 offer? What bull****. Companies who want to avoid having to pay out large prices for the properties they seek, can now just go to the local government, tell them that their tax base will grow if they forceably take those properties and sell them to the private builder. Then the city says we are taking your homes, and here's your “just compensation” which doesn't come close to what they should get knowing their property was being salivated over by some bigwigs wanting to build that office building.
Contact your district representative. Encourage others to do the same. Email, call, write letters to them. They are the people in govt. responsible to look out for your interests. You can also do this for your Senators, but Senators are too busy waxing their dicks about being Senators to have any interest in what we think. Also, I suggest arming yourself with as many weapons as you are able, legal and illegal. It would seem, the day is coming when such people, minority as we may be, will fight the last good fight on this continent. I imagine the fate will be similar to the Indians - proud, brave, free, but not numerous enough.

The Indian analogies are good if not ironic. The fundamental principle on which this nation and its liberty and economy was established was private ownership of land. Of course at this nation's inception it only applied to those good enough to be considered Americans. Injuns need not apply. Now that most precious and fundamental right has been placed in the hands of government and those who can influence them. Again ironically, it seems as if our government looks upon us not as good enough Americans, but rather as Europeans who need to be led by the balls. In fact some of our Supreme Court Justices have said that they will be influenced by European law. Goddamn if their isn't a more worthless piece of **** people than Europe. Yeah yeah, Africa and all that, but Europe should know better. BTW, kudos to Clarence Thomas. Make that guy Chief Justice. He's the only one on that court that seems to know what in the hell is going on. If you get the hankerin to lynch a Supreme Court Justice (and I hope some of those unstable types do), anyone but the brutha; we need this guy.

And learn proper punctuation and spelling when posting on a bass fishing message board.

To you guys using the "internet shorthand"-bad spelling and punctuation lessens your credibility and half the time I don't bother reading what you post because of the terrible spelling and punctuation, and I know I'm not alone in that. In short, you don't get taken seriously.

Jack, if enough people get up in arms about it those high-priced bellhops we call the House and Senate will act, although it may take a while. One good thing that did come of this ruling is people now see the importance of the judges the President appoints. Which will mean the democrats will do all they can to block any judges the President submits.

Dyas: The idea that we should use the Holy Bible to dictate policy in the US is absurd. It is this very idea that has allowed the state GOP to be taken over by closet liberals and power craving loons like the guvnah Riley and Roy Moore. The issues of alcohol, the lottery and family values have been and still are intentionally being used as a way to keep the real issues out of the news - the difficult issues facing the state such as government corruption.

Matt: They speak Arabic in France and in places of Germany too. In response to this, the French instituted a "frenchification" plan for their language because they were scared that their culture was being destroyed. The French government has actually tried to ban words that were considered not French - I think Email was one of them.

Reb, it has been speculated that this USSC decision was a political win for the Bush nominees. The decision has most of the country in an outrage - class conscious lefties like Jackl think its another example of the rich beating down the little guy, while libertarian psychopaths like myself are pissed off about the degradation of our property rights.

I think that might be correct, WTL. Even the most left leaning liberal would be upset if it was their house that was being seized to build something that would generate more tax dollars to be wasted by the government.
