plastic shad

Hi Bass fisherman,

I am new to the board and already have a question. I was wondering if any one can tell me about fishing a shad as a top water lure. Is it a paddle shad that I should you use? How long should it be? And does cutting the tail a little bit does that help with the top water action. What is the best kind to use? ;D

he is talking about a wildeye baits. no don't cut the tail it moves fairley easily. i use both paddle tails and ribbon tails. the best size depends on what size the foragew bait are. i mostly use 3-4"

Are you referring to shad type baits like a Zoom Super Fluke? Here is what one looks like:

I'm with you. You could rig it on a hook rigged weedless and weightless, but that kind of bait is better as a swim bait on a jig head instead of a topwater. Is it something like this?

Sounds like you're talking about a "Sassy Shad" type bait. I suppose you COULD use one on topwater, but why? There are other baits that are designed to do the job you want done. Use them. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel.

I believe any of those soft plastics could be fished as a near the top water but probably doesn't float the way a jitterbug or my fav. the pop-r floats , they all have their own application where they shine, during a pre pawn time that gentle twitching of soft plastics at a rather slow rate can be deadly.
As far as imitating a shad I prefer a black and silver or shad colors for most of my top waters.

I personally think a spinnerbait lookes more like a shad than anything so you could try a buzzzzzbait.Make sure you use a trailor hook.If you are a plastic guy use the ''shad stick'' its a compound bait its half senko half fluke.

I primarily use the Storm wild eye shads. They have paddle and spinner tails. The larger 4-6" paddle tails are great for trolling, the ribbon or spinner tail is great for weedlines. 8)
