Use your sunscreen, fellas.
I now have 6 stitches in my shoulder after the dermatologist removed a spot on my shoulder that was skin cancer. Not the bad kind, a melanoma, but skin cancer none the less. Just wanted to remind y'all to use that sunscreen to avoid what I just went through. It doesn't take a whole lot of effort to put sunscreen on, and it sure beats getting carved on, or worse.

Re: Use your sunscreen, fellas.
Its good that is wasn't the other type of skin cancer. I not only get the sun when fishing, but I work outside in it. My wife keeps telling me to use it, but I haven't did it yet. I think I might start this year. When did you have the spot removed? I am glad you are doing ok. Kevin |

Had it done this afternoon-local anesthesia in the doc's office. It was a basal cell carcinoma, which if you have to get one it is the kind to get. Doing fine, though-thanks.

It's one of the leading causes of death right now in Austraila right now, And yes it can become fatal if left un treated.
Especially when the ozone is depleating more and more over the years the ultra violet rays are getting stronger. Good post Reb, Sorry to hear about that. Robby. |

Glad to hear you're doing well. Probably some stiffness for those long casts for awhile though huh.

One advantage of fishing with my wife the redhead. I nag her all the time to put on sunscreen, and she nags me right back. So we both end up wearing it.
Plus it's fun to put it on her. |

Well Reb its good that it wasnt the melonoma. Its been past time for someone here to address this issue on the site, skin cancer being something that we all have to pay so much attention to. I try to use clothing to protect my skin, you know, long sleeve shirts and cargo pants even when its hot.
Bassfisher02, what you really have to watch is getting badly burned - that can cause much more damage than just a general tan. I think we all have been caught by suprise, but if you can't remember the sunscreen then wear the longsleeve shirts and pants. |

Re: Use your sunscreen, fellas.
I have found something cool a company has come up with. No more squirting bottles and getting sunscreen all over the place. Check out www.SunScreenz.com
The sun screen is made into a towlet. So, you just wipe it on..no mess. You can even have your club logo, etc. put on the packages. Now I will use sunscreen. I didn't because I hate the bottles. No, I don't have any relation or such to this company. Just thought you guys and gals would be interested. |

I use Bullfrog's spray on because it becomes dry and doesn't leave you oily and it is easy to put on. http://www.bullfrogsunscreen.com/a_sku10.asp

Rebbasser, See how much I know, :-[ I thought mellanoma was caused by moles turning jagged looking instead of being round in shape.Glad your alright,I don't think it will ever get sunny enough here to wear sun screen for anything other than windburn.Snowblind is a possibility right now.I am beginning to hold a grudge about the Rodent Phil from Pennsylvania seeing his shadow. Was that six more weeks of winter or six more months of winter ? Re: Use your sunscreen, fellas.
PnJ, you are correct on the melanoma-most often it starts in a mole, but not always. Mine was the basal cell, the easiest to cure-just cut it out, which is what hapened.
XStreamFisherman, Bullfrog is my favorite, too-never go on the water without it. Wish I had used it when I was a kid back in the dark ages when the seeds were sewn for the one I just had removed. |

My face has gotten sunburned so badly before it hurt to make facial expressions.
quick tip: Wash your hands well after putting on sunscreen. If some gets on a soft lure, it can turn a bass away. |

Re: Use your sunscreen, fellas.
Swear by bullfrog. I used to wear it surfing and it stays on. My father in law has 1/2" less of a R ear, 1/4" less of L ear and a small chunk out of the tip of his nose. Why? because he never wears sunscreen. If thats not enough to get you wearing it Ill dig up some pictures. I use SPF30 and I stay brown year round. 8)

Re: Use your sunscreen, fellas.
Reb,
Thanks for addressing the issue. Glad to hear you're O.K. Take it from a cancer survivor that getting treated for cancer is no fun. I didn't have skin cancer, but I don't care what kind of cancer you have. Chemo isn't any fun. Taking a couple of minutes to protect yourself is a lot easier than dealing with the consequences down the road. |
