When should I start throwing a buzzbait in northern ohio? What brands and colors work best for you?

I would start throwin em when the water gets somewhere in the 70s to 80s. I throw Hart buzzbaits but the color is determined by the watrer and sky conditions.

It depends on what type of bass you are fishing for. If you are fishing for smallies, I generally start when the water hits about 56. For largemouth I start at 60-65 depending on the structure and lake.

I only throw 2 colors 99% of the time: White during the day, black at night. In real stained ot muddy water I'll throw chartreuse, but that isn't very often. And I NEVER throw one without a trailer hook.

i've caught fish in the fall on a buzzbait in 45 degree water!!!they are much more verstile than most people think.i like black,white and white/chartreuse booyah clacker buzzbaits.

Hey Dodge-do you find a difference in the number of fish caught with a clacker vs without? I've been debating getting a few, but haven't decided yet.

i caught my biggest fish ever with the clacker.i also have some quiet ones for when the clacker doesn't work but that doesn't always translate into success.if given the choice i always start with the clacker.it really seems to aggravate the fish a lot more.and i always use a trailer hook!!!

hey guys i bought i think its somewhere around a 12 inch buzz bait. what do you think about this size bait i used it this afternoon and caught 5 small ones.

arnt those the jimmy houston or bill dance ones? (think its jimmy houston) anyways, i saw them at bps the other day, i dont have the nerve to buy one. dont see how they will work. but im gunna pick one up for the hell of it.

you know how a regular one works. By the time they here it they have to chase it and sometimes they bite the top of the lure and not the hook,so with the big one they here it and they still have a few seconds to bite, so more than likely their biting for the front of your buzzbait but they get the hook instead. thats what i figured out anyway.

i see a couple of references towards a trailor hook with the buzzbait..is that something that you add on yourself? and if so how do you go about doing that?

a trailor hook is simply a hook which eye is large enough to fit over the hook and barb of your hook. then you take a piece of whole punched coffee lid or piece of a plastic worm and put it on the hook to keep the trailor hook from sliding off. the trailor hook should be facing up, and should be able to swing freely side to side

i know that you can buy trailor hooks for your buzzbaits at a fishing store or buy some bigger worm hooks with larger eyes to go over your other one.

the longer buzzbaits weren't designed because the fish doesn't want to chase it or whatever, it is designed that way to add action to the bait.

Theres no rules of when to throw a buzzbait. Fish can be caught on buzzbaits year round. Post spawn is a good time to throw a buzzbait. I only use three colors black, chartruese, and white. Black at night, chartruese in muddy water, and white anytime else. I use lunker lures. They make a lot of disturbance on the water and put off a good squeak. I really like a buzzbait that squeaks.

By the trailer hooks, they are easier to work with and are designed for that purpose. The regular hooks never sit properly IMO. And a pack of trailer hooks is pretty cheap. I personally only use them if I am getting short strikes, which isn't very often. And if I am, I usually just throw a jitterbug which is a slower presentation, or a popper or spook, anything a little slower. I actually prefer to crank my buzzbaits pretty quickly, perhaps thas why I get few short strikes, they have no time to look at it, either hammer it or let it go.

i picked me up a pack of trailor hooks to try with my buzz baits, (since i had a topic on red hook's in another post, and got mixed reviews i decided to give the red hooks a shot)
