hey Zook this is a catfish!
Thailand this year not too long ago this fisher man catches a 9 foot long mamoth catfish weighing 646 pounds! and is said to be the largest fresh water fish to been recorded. Is this right? anyway a huge fish none the less. they tried to let it go but it didn't make it.

June 28, 2005—It may not have taken much muscle to reel it in, but for scientists this fish is a big catch. Researchers recently discovered this new species of catfish in southern Mexico, and its traits are so distinct that it represents a whole new family of fish. The Philadelphia-based Academy of Natural Sciences, which took part in the research, announced the discovery on June 24. Scientists made their find on the Lacantún River in the Mexican state of Chiapas, and they named the new species after its home waters: Lacantunia enigmatica. As its moniker suggests, this small fish is something of a puzzle. Not only is it the sole member of its scientific family so far, enigmatica is also the only known example of an ancient group of fish whose origins may trace back to the days of the dinosaurs. The finding hinged on enigmatica's unique features, which differ from those of the common catfish. Key variations are in the shape of the animal's skull, jaw muscles, air bladder—which fish use to rise and sink in water—and, perhaps most noticeably, the wispy barbels, or whiskers, around its mouth. The discovery could bring renewed attention to the diverse biosphere of southern Mexico—especially the Lacantún, which the scientists say is facing increased environmental pressure from logging, farming, and the damming of rivers. "The unexpected discovery of this enigmatic new family of fishes emphasizes how little we know about Mesoamerica's biotic legacy," the Academy's John Lundberg said. "This find reminds us that the most basic scientific inventory of Earth's biodiversity is woefully incomplete."

http://www.landbigfish.com/fish/fish.cfm?ID=97 this is all I could dig up on large sturgeon and it says the world record id 468 pounds.this is for the white sturgeon, maybe the other guys couldn't weigh their's. maybe thats why in the article about the cat fish they say the largest recorded. Now thers five kinds of sturgeon. Lake sturgeon record was 168 pounds, Atlantic sturgeon no record posted. The gulf sturgeon found in mexico no record posted. The flat head sturgeon (AKA Shovelnose)no record posted. And the white sturgeon like I said above record 468 pounds. May be if you can find the worlds record that I have not found you can post it? Robby.

POSSIBLE BRITISH COLUMBIA WORLD RECORD STURGEON
by Louis Bignami Fraser River sturgeon may offer a record breaking chance if fishermen follow rather rigorous rules. First, anglers with a valid, non-tidal British Columbia sports fishing license can get a free sturgeon permit. Depending on the area, the permissible catch varies from a fish per day to a fish per season and there are rather complicated minimum and maximum lengths. In the Upper Fraser, guides working with the Recreational Fisheries Branch gather data on the species. So prize sturgeon specimens can be weighed with a cradle under IGFA rules before being returned to the water. Guides, and close attention to regulations are a must! A huge sturgeon was reported from the Fraser River in British Columbia some 50 years ago. It measured almost 20 feet in length, was nearly a century old and strained the scales to 1,832 pounds. Recent reports mention 500- to 800-pound fish from the Lillooet area of the Fraser River. In B.C., locals use 35- to 80-pound test line, ocean rods and peculiar single action "knuckle duster" reels popular with fishermen who mooch salmon. These only hold 170 or so yards of line. According to British Columbia Tourism, "There seems little doubt that a world record IGFA sturgeon will be taken soon from the lower Fraser River." Skeptics might suggest locals invest in a big Fin-Nor or Penn reel with star drags at the minimum, and a billfish drag system at the most practical! The local guides and fisheries experts have set up a unique sling weighing system. This allows fish to be towed to the weighing station, weighed to meet IGFA and NFWFHF standards, photographed and released to breed. Such a system might work elsewhere. I found this 02 but I don't know

actually there facts are wrong on that sturgeon, the biggest ever landed on a rod and reel, was 668 caught by my great grandfather in hells canyon in idaho, i got a photo somewhere, the reason it doesnt show as a record is because they didnt start keeping track until 1960

i heard that a group of scientists wanted to take the fish to study it and put it in an aquarium... then when they found out it died they wanted to mount it for a museum... and then when they went to negotiate with the people who caught it, they came right in the middle of the feast. that's what my gramps told me ne way... he followed the story pretty close 'cuz he used to LOVE catfishing.

i have seen a photo of the sturgeon....had to be like 16 feet tall, atleast 1,000lbs.........i dont kno where the photo is now, but by the looks of the picture it happened a long time ago. thats the reason it may not be on there........it was definitly larger then 668lbs.......
