They like deep, open water which is what you find around dams.

They are notorious for herding shad, so if your seeing them at the dam theres a good chance they are chasing bait fish.

if they are not in the area of a dam, they will not travel to get to a dam. if they are in the area, they like the deep water, along with the baitfish that are being stunned by the rushing water that flows thru the dam out those small holes that water will constantly flow thru(not sure what that is called, maybe trail races, not sure) but baitfish will be sucked thru that on the other side and be spit out the other side making them dazed and stunned and an easy meal for all species in the area, not just striper.

Dams stop the spring spawning migration of stripers. The fish congregate in eddies or slack water near the fast current feeding on baitfish. Striped bass are rarely linked to structure or cover; instead, they relate more to open water, following schools of baitfish. Threadfins, skipjack, and gizzard shad all inhabit dams, in return attracting stripers. What part of Alabama are you from? I often catch stripers at Guntersville dam.
