Default Reel Oils/Grease

Hey guys. I was wondering what reel oils or greases you all use when you open up your reels and do some yearly maintenance. For years I have been using the shimano oil that came with some of my reels, but I have heard a lot of good things about "Rocket Fuel" and Quantum Hot Sauce. Have any of you tried these products? If so, I'd like to know what you thought of them and if they worked good on your bearings. Thanks.

In my opinion Rocket fuel oil does not last very long if you fish alot like I do it could be bad on the bearing life span. I do think Quantum Hot sauce is the best on the market.I would even go as far to say casting ability is very close to the Rocket fuel and the Hot sauce will add longer life to your bearings than the rocket fuel.Thats just my opinion. I use WD-40. Does that have any effect on your reel?

Yes, it leaves the gears and bearings dry and shiny without any protection and ready to be worn out with every turn of the handle you make.

Hot Sauce is really good stuff, a drop of oil to each bearing, a little grease on the gears and oh boy ! smoothy smooth and cast a mile away is my last name.

I think I can answer that one. WD stands for water displacement, which means it gets rid of moisture. It does a good job for that, is a good parts cleaner, but does not do a good job as a lubricant where there is a lot of friction like in a reel-it evaproates. Works great on a squeaky door hinge, though.

Hot Sauce and grease every 6 months and I ALWAYS carry a can of Reel Magic and before I put the reels in there bags give em a spray and wipe them down after drying. I have kept reels like this for years other than changing to the new Hot sauce and they do last and perform MUCH longer.

Because I use WD40 to clean and degrease the gears Bama and it does it brilliantly. I remember well a particular case when a friend of mine saw me cleaning and lubing one of my reels he asked me if I could clean and lube a saltwater reel that his FIL gave him, I told him to bring the reel and to my surprise what he brought looked like a reel ......( maybe that´s why his FIL gave the reel to him in first place ) it was a mix of caked up grease, dirt and sand, the handle didn´t move even a little bit, when his FIL stored the reel he didn´t rinse it and after about a year he remembered he had the reel, first I cleaned the exterior of the reel, grabbed a can of the trusty WD40 and gave the reel a bath with the stuff, waited 20 min and scrubbed it with a toothbrush, like a miracle the gumed up grease dissolved, then I stripped the line and began dissasembling the reel, in the interior all the mechanism looked just like the exterior did, I removed the "cake" and started pulling the gears out of that mass, a bath with WD40, good elbow grease, 2 hours and a couple of toothbrushes later the gears were clean and shiny and the reel was ready to be reasembled, I reasembled the reel then oiled the bearings and greased the gears with Hot Sauce, I oiled the worm gear with Penn Reel Lube, presto, smoothy smooth and ready to fish.

The lubricating properties of WD40 are extremely poor for something that´s going to be submitted to constant wear like the gears, they have to be greased, also, the product evaporates in less than a week so after a week you have nothing there lubricating those gears and bearings.

There is nothing unclean about it, it's a line from the movie -Next Friday-. Sorry if you saw it in another light.

You can use it as a cleaner Bama, don´t use it as lubricant.

I have got by using the WD-40 temporarily when in a bind and only on the bearings - it is true that its so thin and prone to evaporation that its not good. It will make the reel cast pretty fast for a bit, but doesn't seem to last at all. Also makes the reels kinda touchy.
