Travis,

I'm by no means an expert on jigs. But I was told that the hair jig with an eel are a good smallie bait. Also hair jigs are good for cold water jigging. They have a decent action with little movement of the bait. So it works well in cold water when the fish a slower.

Travis, You can fish the hair jigs (paintbrush jigs ;D)Where you would a light jig. They are no different except they usually have a aberdeen hook.Tis bend easily so you can unsnag it and bend the hook back to fish it again.I hope this helps, P N J

I have fished hair jigs some. Â*During the hot summer months, when its a full moon, we fish at night using a hair jig with a pork trailor. Â*I use mostly black, black-blue, or brown jigs with matching pork.

We look for steep rock bluffs and flip the jigs against the bank. Â*Fishing them shallow. Â*We have caught alot of nice smallies doing this.

I dont know what type of lake you fish and if it will work on your lake but on our lake the fish will come up shallow and feed. Â*

You just never know it may work for you.

Hair Jigs....

short ones tied most often with foxtail hair for smallmouth...usually tipped with small chunk, plastic hellgrammite, small minnow (live bait)....great for smallies...

longer ones tied with bucktail, longer tail hair from deer, stiffer in action.....often tipped with minnow for walleye, not tipped for ripping weeds....

rabbit hair jigs tied with zonker strips of two types,....crosscut to the lay of the hair for making the body thicker and lengthwise zonker strips for tails....very flexible hide and soft wafting hair.....both for large and smallmouth...

bear hair also can be used for a pliable hair jig as well as dog hair such as a lab or retriever....long haired dog.

One fellow who has tied hair jigs for years recommends they be scantily tied.....claims they work better.

TRAV,

Â* Â* I use 1/4 oz jigheads with 3/0 hooks and quite a bit of brown deer tail hair in the spring for fishing around rocks. The brown imitates crawfish and the deer hair jigs will fall a lot slower than a rubber skirted jig.
Â* Â* I use 1/4 oz jigheads with 3/0 hooks and quite a bit of white deer tail hair, tied on with red thread when fishing in areas where the bass are chasing shad. The white bucktail jig is also excellent for stripers, whites and wipers when they are chasing shad.
Â* Â* I think the larger jigs with strong hooks are made by Northland Tackle for fishing the Great Lakes.

I have several I made from Elk hair tied to darter heads. I'm not very good at tying but they work ok.
