I am thinking about getting an extreme baitcast combo. I am trying to decide if I should get the model with the flipping switch or not. What are the advantages to this.

well, with the flipping switch, you can engage and disengage the spool with one hand, rather than switching back and forth on the pitch. definitly get the combo, they are a great value.

I would seriously suggest looking into the walmart stores and picking up a diawa rod. The ones that sell for 50 dollars are well worth it and they are on sale right now.

I haven't mentioned it in quite a while, but If you buy a Daiwa reel , you can engage and disengage the reel by using your thumb and push up, or down on the thumb bar to disengage and engage the reel. They used to call it insta clutch as a feature of their reels, but nearly every Daiwa I have used still has it, although they don't tell you about it any more. PNJ isn't that the same thing as a flipping switch? I dunno, sound the same though.
Anyway, I like flipping switches. I also am a righty but fish lefty reels exclusively... this gives my more powerfull arm and thumb (still cast right handed) the power of the spool. The only thing my left hand does is the actually cranking. This added with a flipping switch is unstoppable when you are flipping and get a bite as soon as the bait hits the water. Also, allows you to set the hook much quicker and stronger since the rod is held by your right arm. The flipping switch also eliminates backlashes (for all you noobs especially... LoL) when flipping with your reel loosend up completely since you control the engage and disengage with your thumb rather than the handle. I really like them but have had a few break on me and quit engaging. The reel still works just not the flipping swith. I say go for it but only if you do a lot of flipping... other wise it is just something else to break. You can still flip well w/o it but it is an added luxury and may help you catch those soft bites that come on slack line as soon as it hits the water. Jolly

Jolly, I am talking about Daiwa reels that don't have a flipping switch on them.If you push upward under the thumb bar, it will engage the reel where as most brands won't. P N J

i don't use the flipping switch any ways. the only thing i did like about the sh!tmano bantum reels were the off and on spool releases..
besides if you are fishing tight to cover the idea is a straight totally slack line fall. after the cast-err pitch- just releasing the spool will pull the bait off the cover by 6+ inches. if you want dead straight drops -an i do-let it hit the water release the buttom and pull slack line from the reel this sets up less tension and will not move the bait any during the fall. zooker

One of my reels is a Shimano Castaic I obtained, with visions of becoming Der PhlipMeister. I almost never remember to use the flippin' Flippin' Switch. Still one of the great Shimano reels and, if you bemoan the extra weight the new 200 series 'Rados have been saddled with

I've got flipping switches on bout half my baitcasters and dislike using them...I'd much rather control how far I can swing the bait into a location and feather it with my thumb than using the abrupt switch.
