Hey all. I just got back from Cabela's. The two reels I were considering were the Quantum Accurist PT and the Pflueger President. I loved them both, but the drag on the Quantum was like sandpaper, but not to that extreme. Maybe like paper rubbing paper. The Pflueger's drag was much smoother. My hands arent big enough yet to palm the Pflueger comfortabaly. Are the reels' drags bad because they'd been used so much, or is that just how an Accurist's drag is?
My favorite rod there was a 7' Heavy Shimano Crucial rod. It was amazing how sensitive and light the rod was. What do you think about these rods? The total if I got a Pflueger reel w/ the rod would be $280.00. The guy said he's give me a 25% discount so its about $210. What do you guys think about this setup? My main concern is the reels. It's really hard to pick. The only reason I'm not picking the Quantum is because of the drag. Thanks - Julien |

Jools-the Pfluger and the Crucial would be my choice. I found the same thing with the Quantum-it was slightly rough right out of the box, not just because it was a display reel.

Would the super-flexible Crucial be alright for pitching into weedlines with jigs? Would it be alright with occasional topwater frogs and braided line?

It will work fine for jigs and frogs. The more flex through out the rod blank, the easier it will wear the fish down so you can land it. when comparing rods, hold on to the rod and put the rod tip aganst a friends throat area and have him say something. You should feel alot of vibration when he talks. This is a way I compare rods at a store since I am not able to fish with them first. I will go through an entire rack of the same rod model I am going to buy, trying to find the most sensitive rod out of the batch. Even though they are the same rod, there is a noticable difference between some of them when checking them.

Jools-for pitching, flipping , and frogs you don't want a rod with a lot of flex-just the opposite. You want a heavy action rod with a lot of backbone. PnJ is correct about a more flexable rod wearing down the fish, but when flipping, pitching and frogs you DON'T want that-you are fishing short line(P&F) and in heavy cover. You want to get the fish up and out of the cover as quick as you can, and a heavy action rod makes that a LOT easier. If you are fishing a crankbait, though, you want a lot of flex for the reason PnJ gives.

Julien, I am sorry, I was under the impression that you were buying a 7' Heavy rod ?Some newer progressive rods bend throughout the rod blank, but they will have enough power to pull bass out of cover and they will take alot more abuse before breaking, than a some other brands high end rods.If its not a MH, or a Heavy, I wouldn't consider it for either lure presentation. I do not use a flipping technique, I always pitch jigs, therefore I want a bit of a flexable tip to get the jig under motion easier without alot of movement to get the jig started under motion.P N J

My fault. I should've been clearer. I want to get a 7' Heavy rod for pitching (I don't like flipping.) jigs and some frog fishing. Mainly close up stuff. Now... Would the 7' Heavy Crucial be okay for that?
Thanks- Julien |

Jools, I'm with PnJ on this one, too. That would be a good choice IMO.

Yes! I'm happy that the researching is over now. I got back from Sportsman's a few minutes ago and they had a little rod holder with a 7.5' Heavy Fenwick. It was equipped with a Quantum Accurist CX. I got to cast if for like an hour while my dad was searching around the store. It seemed like a pretty nice reel.
I was looking at swimbaits there. Which ones should I get and how do you like to fish these? Do you ever use braided line when you jig fish? |

Me too. I use it for jigs, Texas rig, Carolina rig, and flipping/pitching. I use fluoro for finesse(small) jigs, but for 1/4 oz. up I use braid.

I use Powerpro. I have hears good things about Suffix braid, but PP has worked well for me for several years. Matter of fact, I've had PP on a couple reels for several years and it is still going strong.

Good. I have been using PowerPro #30 test. I'm probably going to be worm and jig fishing with the new setup I'll get. I will occasionaly do some topwater frogging. Is it okay if I use mono for jig fishing. I don't want to have to switch between braid and mono for worms and jigs.

I know I've asked this question one billion times before, but I'll ask again.
Will get - 7' Heavy - 1 Have - 6'6" MH - 2 Which baits would fit under 1 and which baits would fit under 2? Jig w tube Spinnerbait Crankbait (shallow med or deep) Heavy spoons for northern pike (1/2 to 3/4oz) Jerkbaits Jighead w/ grub Spinner - salmon Any soft plastic (Big swimbaits to small worms) Sorry if I'm being a pest and that I'm a disgrace to bass fishing by asking about salmon and northerns Lol. |

1. Single hook baits like a jig, worm, tube-baits where you have to make an active hookset.
2. Same as above plus spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and weightless soft plastics because weightless baits are easier to throw on a MH rod. I'd also use that rod for crankbaits.

Julien, Mono will work fine for jigs, in fact they slide, or fall through heavy cover easier than braid does if you just fish an ocassional thick weed area, but if you fish heavy matted weeds braid will last longer and cut through the weeds better than Mono. P N J
