I remember I asked some questions about hooksets and drag, and as a rule of thumb you told me if there is little line out with single hooks, a 12:00 hookset and horse the bass. But with treble hooks and moving baits, 3:00 hookset. And treble hook baits you should have looser drag and play the bass.
I'm just reviewing. Please correct me if I'm wrong. What determines wether you should fight the bass vertically or horizontally? What is the proper way to fight a bass. I've heard something about pulling the line in the opposite direction of where the bass is pulling. Is it safe to do that? I feel like I would get the hook out of its mouth. Thanks. Julien |

when fighting a bass i always try to keep the rod low, if possible, at all times. Keeping the rod down will more than likely make the fish stay down, and not jump.

yup, with treble hook lures i set the hook with a firm pull either down or to the side so i dont pull the fish up to the surface where it can throw my lure, and i let the bass tire out with my rod close to the water like rrw said. pulling the rod in differant directions will embed the second treble hook if the lure has one. in weeds, definitly pull the fish straight up,it doesnt really matter though,i usaully just set the hook up and to the side.do you know the plastic holders that they sell 6 pack cokes in? take one of those and try to break the thing pulling across your chest and also try pulling it horizonally. if you noticed something with that experiment, you were able to break the plastic more easily and efficiantly pulling across your chest, not up and down. thats why i set the hook between straight up and verticle. i generally horse bass hooked with single hook lures, where i use heavier line and stronger rods and reels.try horsing a bass out of heavy cover with an ultra light rod and 4lb line,it just doesnt work. match the terminal tackle to the type cover and lure you ar going to use with it,and you will hook more bass and land more of the hooked ones. hope this helped!
