Last night I saw the best football game I have ever seen. Boise State and Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. It didn't turn out the way Flyrod wanted it to, but it had everything but the fumblerooski. Lead changes, a hook and lateral (ladder) for a TD and a Statue of Liberty play for a 2 point conversion in OT for the win. What a game!

It looks like I shut off the TV too early. I missed the Statue of Liberty play. I haven't seen that since the school yard days. The coach had some guts to try it in a real game. You can bet I will be watching ESPN for the highlights this evening!

I was a bit disappointed in the outcome, but you can't have so many turnovers against a good and very hungry team and win. Still, the Sooners showed a lot of the renowned "Sooner Magic" and that bodes well for the future. Another 11-win season ain't so bad, especially considering the adversity they faced AND the admitted/confessed/unpunished screw job at Oregon.
Consider something...You know a program is "Storied" and "Legendary" when a loss makes bigger news than a win. Well, OU fits that description as much or more than ANY other program. Kinda like the NY Yankees...folks want them to lose simply because they "win too much". And...How many college programs, or pro teams, for that matter, have had more than one "Signature" (as Reb so accurately puts it,) head coach or even ONE? Oh, 'Bama had The Bear (still dead. Sorry 'Bama.) Michigan had Bo Schembechler (RIP), Oh-hy-YO State had Wacko Woody Hayes (RIP, but still looking for trouble,) and the Domers had Knute Rockne(Rest In Pieces, sad to say.)...Army had Col. Red Blaik(RIP), and so on. Oh yeah, Iowa and Hayden Fry, but his overall record...ehhhhhhhh. And then there's Joe Pa at PSU...gotta LOVE a coach who swears he's an English Teacher first and a coach second...yep, taught English. What a guy! There are others, some from wayyyyyyyyy back, when schools in the Ivy League, or some you never hear of now, were the terrors. Or, consider U. of Chicago, a small Catholic U....had the first Heisman winner, Jay Berwanger (RIP) and whupped a55 on a regular basis. Well, not to brag, but the boys in Norman OK have had three and now a fourth is cementing his "Signature" status, year by year. Pre-WW2: Bennie Owen (RIP), put OU football on a winning basis. BTW, lost an arm in a hunting mishap (No, it wasn't Dick Cheney!) and kept on keepin' on. Post-WW2: Charles "Bud" Wilkinson(RIP. Now Head Coach for The Heavenly Eleven)...3 National C'ships, 47 game win streak. One Heisman winner. 12 CONSECUTIVE Big Eight C'ships. 98 conference wins in a row. Then: The KING! Barry Switzer...3 National C'ships, 2 Heisman winners. Drove Tom Osborne (Another "Sig" as Coach of The Children Of The Corn,) nuts and Darrell Royal (Former OU All-American under Bud, BTW, and coach of the Texiz WrongWhorns.) out of the game and damned near into a mental institution (he took to hangin' out with Willy Nelson and, well, you know.). Now: Bob Stoops: One National C'ship, one Heisman winner, 4 Big 12 C'ships, and still has the edge, 5-3 , on "Clap on-Clap off" Brown down in AustinK. (And, as a bonus...Mrs. Stoops is HAWT!) Yep, the game was one for the ages...and the better (for the moment) team won. Congrats to the Smurfs! FR I'm a Sooner born and a Sooner bred, and when I die I'll be a Sooner dead.
