Me and my younger cousin went for a run around 4 in the morning ran out in the country to an reservoir/park which is a ways out in the country about 2 miles anyways the story is... we were running by a big set of woods and down an very small path and coyotes were yelping everywhere and my younger cousin was scared im like dont worry there are no coyotes around us just when i said that one runs right infront of me runs off into the woods then moments later prolly a min later we stop and walk a little bit when we witness a black panther killing the coyote we took off as fast as possible and got the hell out of there! it was not even 20 yards from us

You know it's funny you mentioned this story!
Back a few years ago there was reports of a large cat like creature killing things in England. As you know England has no native cats and is an island. So you think impossible right?. Well turns out someone had a Black Panther as a pet and was worried about getting caught having one, So they let it go in the country side. As it started killing off sheep and other live stock they finally captured the beast. So nothing is totaly impossible but I'll go with WTL on this one and say it was a Florida mountain lion. Robby. Trap: consider your self lucky there was another food source in the area other than you. |

Trap most people in our state would say you're full of it. Even the Dept. of Natural Resources. They say there is no such thing in our state. The average person would agree with them. Except for a cattle farmer that lives about 25min from me. He happens to have on tape a big cat eating one of his calves. It made the news here and everything.

I believe you 'Trap. I've seen a cougar here in Indiana and DNR swears there is none here. Theres a few sightings been reported down at Crane but they couldn't verify any. The one I saw was 30-40 yards away walking up a hillside in broad daylight(9-10am), I'd just pulled up to a private pond. I got out , heard some noise to my right, looked, saw the cougar walking up the hill- watched for a minute, slowly and quietly got back in the truck and found me a new fishing area in the next county. I would've stuck around if I had a weapon but all I had were a couple fishing poles ;D Never been back to that area unarmed

Hoosier,
I work with an avid hunter and he says the Indiana DNR did the same thing as Illinois to help control the deer population by bringing in big cats not native to the midwest. They won't admit it though. |

These large cats seem to be a sensitive issue, there have been plenty of reports in rural areas of alabama of panthers, but the commision always eschews it so quickly that it does appear they are afraid of the issue - I think they dont want people to be alarmed. Perhaps they have been let loose to control deer populations, and they are worried if someone were to be attacked they would be blamed.

If thats what they were brought in for, they ain't getting the job done ;D DNR does some strange thing for even stranger reasons. I was told that the reason DNR re-introduced rattlesnakes to Indiana was to control the turkey population. My thought would have been to increase the bag limits or lengthen the season on deer and turkey, they ought to do both for how much you have to pay

trap that is a rarity actually seeing an over sized hair ball. most of them are very wary round humans. i have seen one real close once -close as in 5 feet- while i was hunting the drn said there was no such thing in western ny.-turns looks over shoulder at moutain lion on wall -yep no such thing my butt.
i have hunted and trapped just about every critter on the east coast. take my word for it. if you hear a dnr offical say "there is no such thing" this should also mean "hell we just don't know" zooker

Hoosier that was my first thought also to expand the season. Guess there are smarter people out there that know better than us. At least until a person gets attacked.

There are a lot of ways to control the population, that doesn't involve bringing in evasive speices, or dangerous species. Especially into an area, that is not familiar with this type of predator. I mean what do midwesterners know about bears, mountain lions gators, rattlesnakes etc.. This is extremely ignorant, and dangerous on the part of anyone who does this, including the DNR. If they want to cut the deer population, open the season up, or have special hunts in certain county's. There are more than enough folks who will go get the deer if allowed. Sorry but this is one of my pet peeves. All the bleeding hearts, don't want any deer shot, but they want cheaper insurance rates and great parks. Well you can't have everything without the deer being controlled. They destroy foarmland and woodlands, if the populations are to heavy. There is a easy solutuion, just nobody wants to sign the bill. Zooker, so you have a mountain lion on the wall, did I read that correctly? That would be cool as hell.
Lizards, I agree its a stupid way to control the population, when we could just let the hunters have a few days all out, no limit, they could give the venison to the state to be given to the homeless shelters if the hippies so wished - all should be happy. But no, that would offend PETA. We can't cross Paul McCartney (a brit) or Pamela Anderson (a moron). |
