Well, the weather has been warm this week. But the weekend stands to show us that winter is still here. I hope the rain will be plentiful for all. The wind this week was a factor in where you fished. The main lake was almost off limits. There is still a lot of stained water in the backs of some creeks. I have been working points and half way back in coves. The lipless crank bait in believe it or not RED has been my best producer. ½ and ¾ have been the size. Work over the grass and around slick banks on all points and work it slowly. Spinner baits have helped produce a few fish but the lipless crank bait was the best. The deep bite has been on spoons and tail spinners. Find humps, roadbeds, and drop offs. Look for the bait and fish around them and drop a marker off to the side and work your bait where you saw the fish.
The crappie have been plentiful up on the main lake. 32 to 41 foot has been the best depth. Jigs and minnows are the best baits to use. Use your electronics and look for bait just off the bottom or the fish either right on the bottom or just off. Drop your jig down and hold it still. Drifting slowly over the above mentioned areas with a minnow or jig will get you bit. This week they did not want to much movement.
Remember the limit is 25 and you have to keep every crappie you catch no matter the size. The game wardens have been watching and giving out some tickets. The lake is coming back up with each rain. We are still about 4 foot 3 inches low. The water temp is 50 to 53 degrees. The coming front will probably slow the bite for a few days. Remember the key is to work your baits slowly.
I still have January and February dates open for bass or crappie.
