If the bass misses+Carolina Rig
If your fishing a topwater and the bass misses, should you slow down, stay still, or keep fishing the bait like nothing ever bit? How about other baits such as worms and jigs?
Carolina rig - How do you fish it? When? With what? Don't need to be too detailed, just some pointers. |

carolina rig i always use a pnj for the chaser.. some say the bass hit the bullet -ok may be - but i think they are striking the bait.. these strikes feel like brim. the trick here is to drag the pnj full contact with bottom is the key. if you have to pop it to free it from rocks or logs.. use the same lenth pulls with the pnj as you do the c-rig..
as a chaser i throw the pnj in to the same area as i do the c-rig. yes i have caught bass in 20 feet of water on a pnj.. zooker

slow it down....when they hit it...stop let them take off with it....then set the hook.....i use the technique of no sinker and a senko pulling it across the top of weedbeds...or just the eratic motion pulling it across the top of the water will drive the fish crazy.....it's so awsome when they hit it....

when bass blow up on my topwater but miss,i throw a weightless worm to the spot very quickly and just let it sink. the carolina rig to me is the rig i use if the bass dont want anything else.also,in the spring,i like this rig with a lizard or a big worm.

if they hit, keep going as usual. Chances are he will come back and grab it, with better chance of hooking up.

What Skeeter said. Throw a weightless worm or senko-type bait. You want something that will sink slow like it is injured.

In my experience after missing a topwater strike I just finish the cast and recast a little past the spot and usually get a repeat strike. I have tried a follow up cast with a worm and not have had luck. Mostly maybe because I try to hit the same spot. Maybe if I throw past the spot and bring the worm to the spot and let it sink I might get a hit. This past year I had a 5lber hit on the third pass with a horny toad.

Cool. I never thought of it that way.
What are your favorite dropshot baits? Do you use 2/0 EWG usually? |

Throw a Fluke or White tube weightless after a missed topwater. Looks like a wounded baitfish, and many times it will produce. Also depending on what topwater you are using, sometimes switching the bait up, or even the color can make all the difference in the world(if it was a buzzbait put a trailer hook on it). A c-rig following up a missed topwater would be about my last choice. But zooker brought up a good issue on a missed c-rig fish a PNJ or t-rig would be a good choice, I've never really followed up with something other than repeating the c-rig, thanks zooker.
