Forum Weight Calculator Wrong?

I have caught a few bass that I weighed by my own scale, which I consider to be accurate, and the fish weighed more than a quarter of a pound more on each time.Thebateman said he had the same thing happen to him in the WFT. What do you guys think?

It uses averages and will definatly be off.

A quick, though very rough, estimate of torpedo shaped fish like young bass can be obtained by using: Total Length (in inches)-squared, times girth (in inches) divided by 1200. A 22" long bass with a girth of 15" weighs about 6.1 pounds using this formula.

Another common option used for estimating bass weights is: Girth (in inches)-squared, times length (in inches) divided by 800. A 22" long bass with a girth of 15" weighs about 6.2 pounds using this formula.


It usually adds weight to a smaller fish and takes away weight from
larger fish.

weight calculators don't necessarily take into account the mass inside of the fish and/or the different growth patterns different fish will inevitably have. Just like humans...there are a lot of us that are 6'0" and 200lbs but we don't all look the same or have our weight proportioned the same way.

I have noticed however that it seems to overestimate. Not like I'm complaining.

I once caught a bass that ate a turtle. So good call on that one.

we all use the same weight calculator so every one is even.. i have seen a ton of calculators none are the same. this is the very reason we use this one calculator. to figure the bass weight in forum tourny's..i am also the guy that checks every fish weighed in in forum tourny's-just so you know..

I didn't mean that it had an effect on the tournies. I was just wondering if anybody else had experienced the same thing with the calculator.

Not so my friend.Your generally bigger fish will be more common than the Northern states.The only way to even the field is for everyone to fish from the same Mudhole Lizards goes to.Roflmao...The fish Robby posted last year really had him excited.There is a reason for that, those size of fish are far and very few in between the dinks you normally catch in those waters.Just my opinion, but it was no secret, if you read anything at all you would have known this, but then again who cares as long as we are fishing ? On a recent Bill Dance episode he said the most common formula was: length X length X girth divided by 1250. He did say that with different shaped bass and egg-filled bass it would be inaccurate.

I've always heard the formula used here was the most accurate, it's even in the Illinois Fishing rules handbook.

I want to get a boga-grip and really compare the measurements vs. the actual weight.
