Default Kevin VanDam's ''power fishing''

I was watching todays episode of strike king's ''pro team journal'' show on OLN,and today It was on K VD'S power fishing. He was saying it helps him cover more water, what he does is gets a SPINNERBAIT and will reel it as fast as he could, and giving the bait hard jerks. He also says he will almost always catch the agressive fish.Belive it or not kevin but I can not ever catch a bass by reel ing it in as hard as posible,I only catch them by ''slow roling''.Do any of you guys ever catch any by reeling it super fast?

This was the key phrase. He's targeting the easy ones and a bunch of the by covering water. I burn spinnerbaits if I can find bass schooled on a flat or something like that. Not recomended for thew harder to catch fish.

Yep-one of my favorite ways to fish a spinnerbait is to run it real fast just under the surface creating a bulging wake. Experiment with the retrieves-the faster you retrieve the bait the higher in the water column the bait will run.

I'm guessing this technique would work well in post-spawn when the bass are shallow and feeding like crazy.

No it works anytime. It's the whole point of catching the "ACTIVE FISH". You cover more water, therefor have more chance of coming in contact with an "ACTIVE FISH", which will usually hit most anything. The down side is you miss tons of fish that perhaps you could have caught, that just weren't "ACTIVE ENOUGH", to chase the spinnerbait.

I like to burn the spinnerbaits just under the surface across weed beds. Catch many bass that way.

I like to pull SB's across the tops of vegetation like 'gator grass, similar to fishing a rat, except when I get to the edge of the vegetation I let the SB helicopter down. If the bass has been following the SB across the tops of the grass he can't stand it when the lure drops off the edge and into his face.

when a bass creams a sb bulging the surface it is about as much fun as a top water bite. i run mine all over the place but like the upper half to surface to run it effectively.

You don't see it on TV but KVD fishes with the trolling motor on high 36v most of the time. He covers more water in a day than most people fish in a week. Its crazy seeing him go down a bank that fast, but you can always know who it is without a doubt. Covers more water to find more active fish, simple but it works for him.

Last time i saw him on TV talking about it he mentioned being unable to fish as fast as he wanted to early in his career because of trolling motor limitations IE: no 36 volt setups and no 100+ lb thrust)

Actually it's a very good question IMO. Yes you can "Tune" them. I however would not be the guy to say how. I believe zooker might be a really good one to answer this. Or several others members here, just not me. I'm interested in the responses myself?

POWERBASS,

Â* Â* Get the latest issue of BASSIN' and read it. There is a article in there on how Iaconelli tunes his spinnerbaits. Pretty interesting! Last month had an article by KVD on how he fishes his spinnerbaits!

The best way to get your spinnerbaits to run faster (not actually spin faster) is to change the blades to 1 size smaller. This gives less drag letting the bait go faster, as well as less torque which is what makes a spinnerbait at high speed want to turn on its side or spin. Hope this helps.

Yes I catch fish this way!!! But the key is wind. You will catch more bass on this presentation if it is windy and the water is choppy.
