Question,
Let's say your in pre-spawn conditions. Water high 50's to 60. Relatively clear water. Your in a classic pre-spawn location. Lets say it's the mouth of a small main lake cove. There is tons of gnarly under water brush – lots of thick stuff, no real "isolated" cover, just lots of it. No grass. What's your first second and third lure choice and why? I know a lot of guys will say a jig. Why is the jig as apposed to a Texas rig plastic always a top choice at this time? Just want some other guys thoughts. My choice would probably be #1 – Jig (not because it always works for me but because I just love fishing one) #2 – suspending jerkbait, #3 – Tex. Rigged tube. Comments? Thanks.

I'd cover some water with a rattletrap, then slow down to hit isolated or flooded cover with a black pig n jig, also throwing a spinnerbait could be key.

how deep is the water before it gets to the brush... And about how thick is the brush. These are two important factors...

A red trap, spinnerbait, and a jig-n-pig.

1) Fluke, worked fast!
2) Spinnerbait or crankbait. 3) T-rigged plastic, usually a Paca Craw or a Pulse Worm. I would use these baits due to the fish getting fatter and eating for spawn. If they aren't hitting the faster mvoing baits, then of course the t-rig will get them usually. I prefer jigs with rattles for punching through heavy weeds, and a t-rig for most everything else. I would not worry about running all over the lake if you know the fish are in this area. Just my opinion of course. Lizards

That seems kinda deep for pre spawn but this is a very deep clear lake. The brush is thick as _ _ _ _! This lake is Lake Alan Henry in West Texas. It is very young and the land was not cleared in any way before it was flooded. There is under water mesquite and cedar trees/shrubs literally every few feet covering this lake in most areas. They range from little 3 or 4 foot shrubs to full 20ft. trees. It was only filled to capacity 2 yrs ago so most of the trees are still very full under water - nothing has had time to rot away. I mean THICK STUFF!!! It's enteresting that some guys list a spinner bait second to a jig. It would seem sensible to start with a searching, faster moving bait and progress to a more pinpoint attack, ie jig or plastic. Do you jig guys fish it pretty fast or are you talking about working it slow for this situation? Great posts Men keep it coming. Thanks.

Hackattack,
See now there is something I have never done before. I have never fished a jig as a "swimming jig". I have only flipped them and worked them slow on bottom. Do you just bring it in with a steady retrieve and then stop to let it rest on bottom every once in a while? Do you try to keep it close to the bottom or higher in the water column? Totally new to me.

in warmer water a faster retrieve will suffice. Chatterbaits were spawned by this technique i think. i would experiment though, as they may want it just crawling slowly or pretty aggressive. A good trailer for this is a 5" double tail chompers grub. In clear water I would fish a green pumpkin jig on fluorocarbon line. Booyah or manns makes good jigs.
good luck!! |

Spinnerbait, crankbait, and then a jig. At that water temp, they will chase a bait. No use n wasting time in soaking a bait. Make them eat it!

Rattlin Rouge, spinnerbait, shallow crankbait and jig-n-pig in that order. I'm going to experiment with a chatterbait this spring though. I think it's slow retrieve worked around shallow cover might be the ticket for those cold water bass up here after ice out.

1. Bubblegum colored super fluke on 15 lb fluorocarbon line weightless.
2. metallic Red craw colored Spro aruku shad 5/8 oz. rattletrap. The Spro brand trap fishes through heavy cover better than any other trap I have fished. 3. A baby paca craw flipped on a skirtless 3/8 oz. jig with a good weedguard. A Luhr Jensen sugarshad rattle trap will fish heavy cover well too, but they don't make a red colored trap, Use the spro , or sugarshad on beds as well, these 2 trap brands will sit upright on the bottom. ![]() |

Hey commanche, when you mention trolling a lizard at 2AM, I'm curious as to what exactly is your presentation. On the bottom, or swimming it along the surface? Carolina rig? I agree about lizards at spawning time. A friend of my father when I was a boy used to pay neighbor kids to catch spotted salamanders. He used them in shallow water in the spring and man on man! Did he catch some monsters!!!

Depending on water clarity, and weather conditions I'd fish 1) Rattle Trap, 2) Spinnerbait, 3) jerkbait, 4) Swimjig HOWEVER, with water that warm and recent occurance of the full moon I'd be up looking for beds as well.

1) Kevin Van Dam wild Shiner jerkbait (!!BABY BASS!!)
2) Super Fluke or Super Fluke JR (Baby bass) 3) Texas Rigged Frog- something like a horny toad or YUM's Buzz frog (green pumpkin/smokin' shad etc..) *stick to natural colours!* My best lure during the 3 spawning periods is without a doubt KVD's wild shiner in baby bass
