Cool Canyon Lake TX 3/9/07

Another day on Beautiful Canyon Lake
(The Jewel Of The Texas Hill Country )
Launched circa 0700 at Jacobs Creek, fished long bank at the park, caught 11 apiece there, my first two on shaky head worm.
Crossed the mighty body of water and fished from Turkey Creek "Exit" to Comal. Caught a few. Fished SE bank of Comal...caught a few more.
Totals : George 19. FlyRod 18. Fish Of the Day: Flyrod, Smallie, decent.
Trailered at 1600. Once back to Geo's home in Garden Ridge, took me over an hour to get home. Loop 1604 was unalloyed HEll! It takes me 25 minutes to get to Geo's in the early AM.
I've told Geo that we either fish 'til at least 1730 or launch earlier and leave earlier, or I'm staying home!!! He fully understands.
Got home to learn that another relative had kicked the bucket...Geez!

That will be all for now, class.

Oh yeah? Well, I'll see that and raise you IH-10 from downtown to DeZavala!
Your move
But, just to prove I'm an accommodating sort; The rest of my lil' basses were caught on a mix of 4" Watermelon Seed Ringworm, 4" Red Shad Power Worm, rigged with a pegged 1/16 oz tungsten weight and a small glass bead, a medium Rebel Crawfish crank in Brown 'Dad finish, a 5" senko type in amber/green, T-rigged, and a 4" Tiki in W'melon, rigged wacky on a 1/0 Gamakatsu WEEDLESS finesse hook.
No bass were harmed in the making of this post!

flyguy,
I got to fish Canyon a few years ago, but found that the "fat toads" were somehow stunted what gives on the fish population?

Jabe,

It's a typical "highland" lake; Sheer, rather clear, with little "dirt"...mostly rock...virtually NO weed growth, and little timber by comparison to many other lakes. Too, it's an oldie, by today's standards, having been impounded in the early 60's. There is a forage base that includes shad (Though I doubt they are abundant,) crawfish, various sunfish, and the occasional small reptile.
The lake has a stocked striper population that competes for forage, expecially the sunfish and shad, I'd guess. White bass are seemingly abundant and certainly compete as well.
The introduced Smallmouth population has hung on for years, and will probably continue, though I doubt they will ever be a truly abundant species. I caught three yesterday, in fact; One about 1.5 lbs and two dinks. There are also a few Guadalupe Bass and some few Spots, according to some. These are rarely of any size.
BTW, the crappie fishing sux but there is a good catfish population.
There are three lakes in my "circuit" that are in this situation. In addition to Canyon, there are Medina (1911!) and Travis, west of Austin(k), They are all "highland" lakes, and share the same general characteristics, including heavy traffic most of the year, especially runabouts, skiboat, sailboats, PWC, and other nuisances. I can't say with certainty that so much traffic has had a direct effect in the numbers and quality of fish, so I'll leave that to the experts.
Canyon has no dearth of numbers, especially of Largemouth. It's the average size that frustrates.

BTL,

Right you are, and we certainly have many lakes in Texas that are the exact opposite of Canyon, Travis, and Mo-deena. Note that I don't gripe about fishing those three. They are, after all, close to hand and in this day of ridiculous gas prices are too be even more appreciated ('cept for the Lake Lice and others who simply burn fuel and make wakes and noise.)
There is another "Hill Country Jewel" even closer than the other three. That is Beautiful Boerne (ber-knee) Lake, located a couple of miles from the town of Boerne. It's small and no gas engines may be used save in an emergency.
That makes launching and trailering a trial although Rebbasser and I have pretty much perfected the technique (For an instructional video and inspirational refrigerator magnet, send 15 bux to...).
Oddly, perhaps due to slightly warmer average temps, there is more-than-plenty weed growth in Boerne Lake...almost too danged much as the water warms and sunlight periods lengthen.
Because of the no-engine rule, 'cept for trollmotors, one enjoys the company of kayaks, small sailboats and sailboards, and some marathon swimmers...good times. Even the game warden paddles about in a 'yak and is a heck of a nice guy.
Actually, and Reb will attest to this, we've caught larger bass, on the average, at Boerne, than at the other three lakes. Fewer, most times, but better.

Tight lines,

FR
