Yes the pun was intended!
Left SI 0200 Friday night following the Chum Runner for Fin Loco's maiden voyage to the otherside. On the otherside at daybreak. First bird pack at 73NM. First pass hook up on 2 small black fin tunas. Next pass on birds hook up on 15 pound dolphin with the most amazing electric blue color I have seen on a dolphin, ![]() and a 10 pound wahooooooooooo. ![]() More birds and more passes but no more takers on this group. Run out to 78NM for more birds. Several passes and no takers. Finally, 4 lines get hit and 3 are burning thru the mono like no body's business. 1st line in is a baby YFT at 21", Christopher puts a quick NOAA tag on him and sends him back. All the while, one of the reels is still tearing line. This reel was all the way down to the mono backing which means it had over 400 yards of line out. Finally,,,,, Damien got the fish to stop and the fight was on. It took about 20 minutes to get the line back boat side. Once it was back to the boat, it still took another 10 minutes to pull the fish from the depths. We finally see the bimini knot, then the leader and then momma shows up in the form of a 50# YFT. It ran around on the surface for a while doing it's death circles but it didn't last long as Christopher stuck the steel to it's head and hauled it over the gunnel. During Damien's fight, one of the other fish got off, probably a decent sized fish based on the line pull and bend in the rod, strippin' line at 23#'s like nobody's business. The other fish was mine and it too, pulled a bunch of line and made the gold 50W sing my favorite song. This one took about 20 minutes to get boat side where Christopher poked his head and hauled him in. This one weighed in at 43lbs exactly. ![]() Trolled some more packs and checked some other temp breaks but no more sushi for the day. Turned for home and was back at the dock at 1830 on Saturday evening. A HUGE special thanks goes to Mark (chummer) for his tuna tutorial. Mark is one of the most gracious people I know. He allowed us to tag along and teach us how to fish for tuna. The crew for this adventure was: me, Christopher, Ryan, and Damien Oh, the seas were about a 3ft chop on the way out, and turned to 4-6 on the way in. All without a worry. It made for a long ride but safe and sound and sore. |
