Red face Bayne Lake... Problems with red power pro

Sunday the 29th April 2007
Bayne Lake, Harding Township, New Jersey
Water Temp.?
Visibility: 6 inches at the most.
Air Temp around 57- 60 degrees
Wind blowing like crazy
Equipment of Choice:
HuckFinn
Shakespeare: Cateva IM 7 Graphite (csp702m) Medium
Shimano Symetre 2500 FI Spinning Reel Spool number one Seaguar Inviz x 8 pound line (100 % Fluorocarbon). Spool #2 Red Power Pro 40/10 Line cut off Curado after massive backlash.
Partner (son John)
Cabela’s Salt Striker ISC661-2W 6-6 Casting 2pc
Shimano Curado 200 spooled with Power Pro Red 40/10
Second Reel Daiwa High Speed BW2 spooled with Power Pro Yellow 40/10
Both of his reels were Low Profile Bait casting
Hawg sauce was added to all lures.
I was the first to hit the water using the above outfit; at the business end I added the last Case Plastic Black Jacks Worm that I had. (Lost all my Case stuff a couple weeks ago with Crankybait, fell out of my bag.) Weightless
The line cast like a charm. I had no problem reaching my target, well except for my aim.
The line held up well to the worm no major kinks; I did close the bail by hand.
After about 20 minutes with no hits, switched to a Joes spinning fly; (thanks Glenn for the heads up about this one) again the lure and outfit performed well. The Fluorocarbon:
got twisted some because I was not using a swivel with the spinner. However, just by letting the lure spin out between casts the line never bunched up on me. Well one time but that was all. The twists put in the line by the spinner spun right out.
One thing I noticed about this line is that it FLOATED; I was always under the impression that an angler should not use Fluorocarbon for top water because it sank and messed up the action of the top water lure. I am not normally a Fluorocarbon user so I don’t know; perhaps someone can help with that?
Now the bad news:
As I said above my partner was my son John. He made one cast with the Red power Pro and got a small backlash. Pulled it out and made another cast, the reel just blew up. The backlash was just as bad as I had fishing with Crankybait a couple weeks ago. This was the same line (from the same spool) that caused the problem back then. The backlash was so bad that he could not continue to use that reel. He switched over to the Daiwa, spooled with the same weight Power Pro but Yellow not Red and had no backlash problem the rest of the night.
I like Power Pro and use it on my spinning gear as well as the “casters” When I cut the line off his reel a couple weeks ago I put it on my spare spool for the Symetre. As a test I switched spools and started to throw top waters with the Red Power Pro. What a backlash I got on my spinning gear. After a few casts I had loops coming off the spool and they just tangled up no end. This kind of ended out trip.
Any ideas: could it be a bad batch of line?

Score:
John 7
Old man 0
See next report for more about the red power pro and hawg sauce
