Yesterday, the 2nd legal day of bass fishing, I went on a rental boat with my dad. We're still working on our boat. Good thing we brought out trolling motor along, because that wind was horrible. It was cold and windy at first, but then it calmed down and got really hot. Then it got cold and windy again, then at the end of the day it got calm again. The only equipment we had was a trolling motor, so it was kind of tough to locate the fish. I told my dad we should head out to the reeds and lilly pads, which are still submerged, in about 3-8' of water. I casted out with a 3/16oz weight and a Green Pumpkin Baby Brush hog, and landed two on two consecutive casts, a 14" a 15". I'd never done that before. The wind was so heavy, I couldn't even feel the bite. It was just like a rubber band.
We went to a little bay and I lost one on a Baby Bass Trick Worm, due to a loose drag. When it got sunny, I spotted a nice bass just swimming around a dock, but I couldn't pitch because my tension knob was a little tight, and my bait went PLOP, causing the fish to swim away. A while later we went to a calmer bank and pitched to docks and overhanging trees. I landed another small one on a 3.5" white tube. My dad got his first of the day on a Bleeding Bait Tube. His was 12". He caught another on a White Trick Worm when we went back to the docks. When it got warmer and sunny, I headed out to a shallow bay and saw tons of little bass. Do you think there were bigger bass in there? Why did I only see little bass? We went for hours without catching any fish. I had a bite, but I didn't get the fish. We finally went back to the original spot, the reeds, and I got the last one of the day. It felt awesome. I realized they were right on the outside of the grass where the gravel and shore started. Is finding what the fish are doing for the day finding the pattern? I think I should've tried cranking the shallows, but the grass catches onto the treble hooks. We have ultra clear water in almost all of our lakes. (about 16' visibility) I landed 4 fish total. My dad landed 2 fish. We only got three pictures of the same fish. The rest were videos. I've been learning A LOT lately. I love fishing more and more every time I go out. I'm obsessed with it. It's all I do. First Bass. ![]() What do you think I should've done? Thanks. |

Hey Joolz,
Lake 5 is a great body of water. You can go out there all day in the month of June and hammer fish on a 6" black ribbon tail worm with an 1/8oz slip sinker. Let me know if you ever want to get out on Okauchee, Nagawicka, etc. We could probably set something up. I promise to put you on some fish if you "pimp" my guide service.

Joolz, I wish I had half your knowledge when I was your age - we just wandered around with a pole in our hand and a hook in our thumb!

Thanks Skeeter. Instead of making a whole new post, I'll just report quickly.
I went out yesterday the boat and caught 5 largemouth in about 2 hours. Overcast skies, heavy downpour, wind. I caught the first four on a Gold #8 Suspending X-Rap. The last one I caught on a Zara Puppy in bullfrog pattern. I also had two GIANT pike smash my spinnerbait. All in all, it was fun. All caught in about 3' of water. By my estimation, the water was somewhere between 55 and 63. |
