I don't think anyone has ever tested that and if you cared much about catching them again later on, then you wouldn't.
May I ask why would you want to know this?

depends alot on the air temp, once a fish looses its slime on the skin, you're getting close to killing it....I'd say 5 minutes out of the water on a hot day will probably croak him

odd question... but I recall reading somewhere, in fisherman mag I think, that anything over 2:30 - 3 minutes or so becomes detrimental to the fish. I'm sure air condition and the fish itself could cause some variation in the time. I'm with JB - 5 minutes is a guaranteed croak!

It's hard to tell. They obviously don't flop around the whole time they're out of water. You could get electronic monitors and connect them, and wait for the flatline. Ask In-Fisherman.

about the worse thing you can do to a bass in the hot summer is lay it on your boat (aluminum or some hot metal) and take its pic, kinda like laying it on a fryin' pan

After appx. 2-3 minutes they become "brain dead". Not able to feed and therefore will die within a couple of days, and thats if they "do" get back in the water. In the event that the fish is left out of the water for the same amount of time and while it's gills are still active, it's time to take him home.
He won't make it. Please be carefull with your catch. Not too much handling, wet the board that your measuring the fish on, don't allow the fish to "flop on the deck",this removes the slime that helps protect the fish against contaminates in the water, make sure that the water is well oxygenated and flowing with the areator on manual. When out of the water recirculate on a constant basis. Ensure that the fish is not mishandled by those that weigh them in if you fish tournaments. These are just a few items that you can do to help the fish stay alive. Different sights as well as books tell alot more ref. this subject.

If it takes a while to get a picture, weigh, and measure the fish dip the fish in the water between each task to get the water circulating through the gills....

If you catch a female that has just spawned you need to get her back asap! They are very weak at that point. I struggled to keep one alive (4.7 lber) in a tournament once and she went right in the livewell with the arriator (sp)on. Didn't have her out of the water more than 20 seconds.
