Well as I'm reading the Indiana fishing rules and regulations it says that you can have 5 bass per day(agregate of both smallmouth and largemouth). I was wondering if you were fishing with someone else are you allowed to have say 1 guy catch 7 and the other catch 3 or is it once an individual catches 5 he is supposed to stop.(yes you could always cull them) I realize most of the time if a guy hits 5 and the other fella hasn't I would continue to fish, but is this against the rules? And is it different rules while tourney fishing? I couldn't find anywhere in the rules about it, just wondering how or if anyone else knows this. And does anyone really practice this? I know If I go hunting with someone, and I shoot a deer, and the other guy hasn't I'll usally try to help him get a deer, by wandering around in the woods close by(it's illegal to push deer in Indiana, so I don't I just WANDER INDIANA, as our state slogan seems to be) But if he doesn't shoot one and I see another one, and of course he wants me too, I will shoot it for him. Now I've never actually shot 2 deer in a day, and I know quote un qoute it's Illegal, but some things are kinda standard practice also. Just seeing how most of you folks view the situation? Yeah I know this could be a very touchy subject, but hey it's still winter here

if you are fishing a tourney and you catch 5 and the other guy only has two thats his problem. you keep fishing and cull when you get one bigger than one of the 5 you already have. if its a two man team tourney and the limit is ten you keep all fish till you get ten in the boat.then you start to cull again. if you are fun fishing you do whatever you what. two men 10 fish aloowed in livewell.3 men 15 and so on. or whatever the limit is in your state. i quess in hunting if it was the last day of the season and your partner had not got a deer i would proably shoot one for him. but some people may call you a meat hunter.

Actually the only way to answer this question is to call your states conservation dept and ask them. In the end it's up to the conservation officer, and the judge.
For example. In Virginia, it is against the law to continue to fish for bass (for example) after you have reached the limit. This would seem to indicate that you can't legally cull a fish. However, a call to the enforcement division of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and a chat with the head of the dept, revealed that YES. That is the law. HOWEVER..because they cannot PROVE that you are fishing for bass, you are allowed to continue fishing. Officers are instructed not to make an arrest for anyone who upon catching an additional fish, IMMEDIATELY releases one of the ones the angler had creeled. Yes, techincally you were over the limit, but there is no intent to break the law. If you put that extra fish in the livewell, and do not immediately release one of the ones you have previously creeled, it is reasonable to assume that you intended to break the law. You're busted. (At least that was what I was told several years ago.) |

In NC if you catch your limit of 5. Then continue and cull the smaller ones.

After you hit the limit, why not just go all out catch and release?

Lone Archer,
In tournaments you catch the biggest weight that you can within the limits. If you catch one thats smaller than the rest then you cull this fish or whichever fish is less weight. After the weigh in all fished are released alive. |

I know when we take our family of 5 fishing with a guide that we have always counted the limit of fish, not who caught what. The only time it matter who caught what was when someone caught a really really big fish.

Lizards,we fish boater and non boater 5 fish each because you are fishing against each other.Team events 8 fish are weighed in instead of 10 fish. Don't ask me why because I don't know. ;D P N J

Lone if you are fishing and have a limit ,you are supposed to quit fishing. You will get a ticket for fishing illegally, trout and crappie and perch are what they enforce here, bass fishing is allowed as long as you have a livewell and they can be released without harm. They do stop and check to see that you only have a limit in the livewell, no more than that.I have seen a boat that had a limit of bass on a stringer tied to the side of the boat that was ticketed for fishing with a limit of fish. Apparently a stringer can harm the bass or the officer felt they weren't going to be released.P N J

PNJ, I don't doubt what you saw, but it's in direct conflict with the regs which allow fishing for a species while in possession of a limit as long as they're released. "# A person may continue to fish for a species while in possession of a daily limit for that species provided all fish of that species subsequently caught are immediately returned to the water. Special provisions are made for largemouth and smallmouth bass. # A single, uninjured largemouth bass or smallmouth bass that an angler is landing, measuring, or in the process of releasing from a recirculating or aerated livewell, is not considered to be part of the daily limit." |
