Default Deadsticking a toad???

So there I was, cruising the shoreline working a toad and spinnerbait in amoung the heavy cover the bass were holding tight to on this hot sunny cloudless day. I found an ideal spot along the bank. There was overhanging limbs providing shade and shelter, and there was also some good vedgitation in the water along with a nice laydown nearby. Perfect spot I thought as I flipped my Yum Bsss Frog perfectly into the back of the pocket about 2 foot from the bank. Perfect except for the backlash that sprung out of my cast. I muttered a few expletives and layed my rod down to work on untangling my birdsnest. It took me about two - three minutes and I finally had my line back to action mode. I began my retrieve and felt the toad was bogged down into the heavy weeds. So I pulled hard on the rod to free the toad from the weedy mess. However, I was jolted when that weedy mess turned out in fact to be a huge bass that had inhaled my toad. He blew up out of the water and the toad flew from his mouth after a 10 second skirmish. I've had luck working toads in many ways, but never ever thought deadsticking a toad would be a usefull approach. Funny what accidents can teach us.

It sure is. That's how I learned about deadsticking Tiki Sticks-picking out a backlash.

That happened to me also. Picking out the nest the horny toad sunk in open water. After getting it out I started to reel in so I could cast back to the pads. I felt a tug and kept reeling. The bass shot out of the water like a torpedo chasing that toad. The reason it was in open water I didn't want the toad to get tangled in the pads as I was picking out the nest. So I recast it to open water. I just didn't have the patience to let the toad sit that day as the pad bite was on.

Usually deadsticking is in reference to snakes.Lizards can vouch, the only good snake is a dead one.Hell sometimes you even club a stick to death that looks sort of looks like a snake, just to be sure it wasn't ? P N J

Oh, I get them too, as Flyrod can attest (Shaddup, FR) but I learned the deadsticking technique on one cast.

I'm not sure which I hate worse Zooker. A backlash from braid or mono. Both are somewhat undesirable I must say. I just know from now on I am going to be ready to cross their eyes when I start to reel my line back in.

Guys, if you get a bad backlash with braid, unlike mono, you don't have to perform surgery. Using a small crochet needle or a BPS backlash pick-that's my weapon of choice-you can salvage the braid. It may take a while, but I have not had to perform surgery on braid since I discovered you can pick it out. I don't fix it on the water, but it beats buying more braid, especially if you just respooled in the first place.

Dig your thumb into the spool then, turn handle a few times. A lot of times it will pull out the first time.

To be completely honest, I've seen less snakes here than in Indiana, it's been a very pleasant surprise.
