The problem is sometimes I need braid but I never use braid, It always ruins the eyes on my rods, Does no one else have this problem? Or am I overlooking an easy solution?

The only way it's ruining your guides is they are older guides. 95% of the rod manufacturers now use guides that work fine with braid. Now if you are using you rod to try to pull free of snags, and sawing the braid against the guides it can adversely affect them. I haven't have a guide go bad from using braid for 3 years. Now I have had them go bad from me stepping on them, and bending them wrong. I think that if you try it again, you will be pleasantly surprised with it.

Lizards and Flyboy pretty much summed it up, I use relatively cheap rods [note that they are made by Shimano and Pflueger] so they are good brands just lower end rods, probably in the 50-70 dollar range. And they hold up fine with braid, no problems with the guides at all as a result of using braid, and I've been using it for years.

I've only had one go bad, but I think it had something to do with the fish that day. We had caught 15-20 dolphin in 40-45 minutes when I decided to pick up my bass rig. After catching another 15 dolphin the eye on the end of my rod popped out. Oh well, sure was fun.

the older braids, IIRC were kevlar which tended to chew up the guide eyes, while the newer stuff is spectra and is alot gentler on them. I read this somewhere a bit ago, and it sticks in my mind. Try Powerpro, you'll probably like it.

You could always use a higher test Flourocarbon. Apparently, there's some big how-do-you-do about the way it's nearly invisable under the water. You could try that if you're hellbent on not using braid.
