Couple Questions for the experts

What size hook and style of hook do you use when fishing 9.5 inch - 12 inch worms?

What action of rod, length of rod and composite (graphite or glass) of rod do you use for casting jigs on ledges/drops?

I just thought I would try and get some feedback from the group.

I'd use a 4/0 offset gammy with a heavy or MH baitcaster. However I see many guys at lake Monroe in southern indiana use big 10 inch worms on just about every kind of setup you can imagine. Bigger profile worm, bigger area to penetrate with the hook, so go bigger IMO. works on KY lake to!

i would use a owner 5/0 wide gap plus for my hook. a 7' medium heavy rod. and seaguar inviz x for my line ( a lot of guys probably wouldn't want to use fluorocarbon for this but i really like it myself).

I would use a 5/0 offset gammy hook. They work really well for me when I'm fishing big soft plastics. For the rod I'd go with a 7' MH graphite rod. What I look for in a jig rod is a rod with good backbone and a nice sensitive tip. I like to be able to feel what my jig is doing while its under water and be able to get a good hookset. This setup does both. Hope this helps.

5/0 or 6/0 ewg gammy.. the trick with large bait such as the 12" worm you need to texaspose the hook. count longer before setting the hook. i used 7.5" senko type bait once i had to count to 7 to get a good hook up..

I know that I don't have enough patience to count to 7 before the hook set. I realize that the situation dictates the hook set. We use a lot of 10 -12" worms on Kentucky lake and I am still learning to ledge fish. It doesn't seem like I will ever get the hang of ledge fishing. I guess that means that I need to spend more time on the water. Darn the luck!

think top water pause. that long a wait is good with them worms.. the bass will grab the worm by the tail them take a bigger bite this bigger bite is where the hook should be..the reason for the texasposed is the hook digs in the second you start to pull the line and not pull the hook out of the fishes mouth..

I'd use a 11/0 hook and 7' heavy rod.But that's just me.

10 inch - 5/0
12 inch - 6/0

6ft rod if you need to make short accurate presentations
7ft rod if you need to make longer casts

At least a 5/0 EWG-that's a lot of plastic, and you don't want the throat of the hook clogged up with plastic. 6-6 to 7' MH action rod.

I fish all my non-finesse non-flipping jigs on a 6-10 H action rod.

Does anyone ever do the double hook method? 2 hooks rigged a few inches from eachother, one to cover the front of the worm and another to get the back? Only practical if you dont liek to use such large hooks. I've done it a few times but I dont fish that sized worm too much.

I only use the one big hook upfront, but can remember when alot of guys would use a worm prerigged with 2 or more often 3 hooks, that were probably the size of a @4 crappie hook. A big rage in the 80s, creme had them and I think a brand called tournement worms would sell a few prerigged ones in packages for a couple of bucks...not many colors available tho. Black or creme color or a few that had a dif colored straight tail, and then some with a small spinner in front.

man if this doen't bring mymomisbecky oughta woodwork, what will?

ive never heard of tournament worms but there are a brand that i have bought a couple of times they are prerigged and work great for me but the hooks are small and are sometimes very hard to get out

if ya wanna make your own, just tie two hooks together w/ 65lbs PP. Then rig the worm on that. The added weight of the second hook could provide a very deadly fall rate when rigged weightless.

yeah i have tri-rigged with a 16" worm and a 18" lizard.. the trick is to use trailer hooks -like those used on a spinnerbait- all the points need to be texasposed..

The biggest worm I have used was a 10" and I think I had a 4/0 EWG hook, but the hook seemed too small. Worked though, mostly used during and after dusk.

5/0 hook is what I use on 10 inch worms....12 inch probably would go with a 6/0 or a 7/0 if available......like expert zook says you need to wait a little longer with a big worm....like at least 3 seconds.
