Went out to a little pond in the area (2 acres or so) to shakedown my new trolling motor for my inflatable, anyway I had a good morning, landing 15 or so, 4 of which were over 5 Lbs. Anyway, this is the one I landed, (lost another which could have eaten this one

21" long with a 22" girth? sounds way off.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice catch, but I don't know about that having a 22" girth. Judgeing by the pic it cant be over 15-16". Where and how did you measure it cause she only looks to be about 4.5-5lbs. to me.

Had to Guesstimate on girth, could be 19 or 20, but not much less. I was being conservative on length... My rod measures 21" from butt to the black band in front of the reel. but as her tail is spread, she might yeild another inch or so., she was fat, and was definately a solid 7. I do have a fairly accurate arm calibrated from 25+ years of walleye fishing... Unfortunately, I didn't have my measuring stick handy. Mind you, it is still the biggest I have yet caught. So there...

even if it were 22" long, it still wouldn't be a 19 or 20 inch girth. looks to be a 4-5 lbs fish. hopefully you threw her back so that we can't really verify, nice catch by the way, damn nice fish for that part of the country. what did ya catch her on?

nice one wargoth,
a easy way to figure length and girth of the fish, if you have no tape, take a piece of fishing line and wrap around the girth, and tie a simple knot in the line to represent the girth, then do so again with the length..then when you get home measure the two distances and put them in the forum weight calculator...you may have to cut that line with the knots and put it in the tacklebox or your pocket, then retie your lure. |

Well of course I put her back Rob, I didn't hurt her (the only time I ever take them home)
And that is a great idea JB, but I was sorta in a panic, as I belatedly realized I had left the camera in the car and had to beach da boat and go grab it... was worried she might throw the hook while I was messing around with that, and didn't think of it. I also found my tape/scale in my bag AFTER I had let her go. I can judge a walleye's weight within a quarter pound by looking at them, but I haven't gotten the knack with bass as of yet. I can also get them within half a pound by feel... I just need to staple my tape/scale to my forehead...

If those are the true measurements then your estimate is quite lean, a bass with such dimensions would be in the vecinity of 9.5 pounds.

Deffinitely a nice bass. No way 8lbs.. I mean it looks around 5-6lbs, but a picture can throw you off, so who knows. Either way good fish.

From the pic, I'd say the fish to weigh between 5 sand 6 lbs. Nice catch, and congrats on your new PB

It happens to the best of us... I had a bass get off about a year and a half ago while I was fishing lilly pads... she jumped and I instantly knew she was going to be VERY close to double digits, I could see that huge belly as she jumped, went back under and another 5 seconds of a fight and the line went limp... I was heartbroken, I just sat on the ground for a good 5 minutes recovering. She spit the hook somehow, not in the jump, but underwater somehow. Its a heartbreaker, but you just gotta keep on the hunt and eventually another hawg will come along.

We 've all had our share of big bass that get off the hook, thats one reason that they are so big....rofl...heres one that denny and me both weighed this one with our scales at 6.013, not a bad ohio fish, most only get 7-8 pounds in lakes or rivers, with a few exceptions....

That's an awfully small looking fish there JB... I wouldn't guess it for more than 4, but that is a picture for ya LOL. Seriously though, I know what you mean. Anything over 5 up here is a monster and I've never even seen anything over 10 in person
I never did mention that this pond, 30 Years ago was a "Pay to Fish" Trout pond, spring fed, full of cover, food, and totally inaccesible except for 50 foot of bank... If you ain't going in with a raft, you ain't fishing it. And I have permission to fish it from the owner. Just wish there were 5 more ponds just like it....

That would be the reel. It is tolerable. It is definately a cheap reel, but it works decent I guess.
