We have alot of new members since the last time I posted my stupid theory, so here it goes.
My stupid theory is once you catch a bass , check the gripper teeth and it will help you decide on what lure selection to use.For example, if you catch a bass and the gripper teeth are sharp, chances are the bass are primarily feeding on baitfish. If I catch a fish that has dulled gripper teeth, chances are the bass are feeding on crayfish, so I would select the lures according to the gripper teeth and see if my catch ratio improves. ![]() Bass are an opertunist, you will catch a bass on a jig once in a while , even if they are primarily feeding on baitfish. The key is to catch the first fish and then experiment with my theory and see if it increases your catch. ![]() Last edited by pig n jig; 11-15-07 at 05:51 PM. |

As we move forward in this new millenium, science and technology are combining hand in hand to revolutionize our world. For instance, researches at the University of Chicago have developed what could be the forebear to the cold-fusion reactor. In India, scientist Pranoy Karamchand has reputedly found the last number of PI, and in Bath, New York P N J has proposed his special unified theory of gripper teeth - changing the way billions worldwide choose between throwing a jerkbait or a jig. Some prophesy that all this represents the nearing end times, that the growth of technology and knowledge is so great that we will soon run out of new stuff to create. But never fear, Shoestring Dubois is garanteed to come up with another stupid idea that will be displayed prominently in your BPS catalog.

So PNJ does it work for you? What if they're eating frogs? Are their teeth green?

Bob, How hany times have you fished a stupid frog , other than when your in the slop ? The only time I tie a frog on is when I have tons of lily pads, or just plain old dirty, scummy ,floating sh!t, all collected in one contaminated cesspool of a area. Even then, it had better be 90 in the shade before I tie that stupid looking frog on.

PnJ, to add to your "stupid" theory I've found if the inside of the bass's lips are red it is another indication they are feeding on craws. Ger the dull gripper teeth AND red lips and you cn pretty much take it to the bank they are feeding on craws. Especially when you see antenna sticking out of the fish's throat

just to add complexity to the theory, what about the age of the said bass? Do you believe the teeth as a whole become duller with age such as with humans, or do you think its more like an alligator(i believe) which continuously regrows teeth to prevent dulling? If so that would create another variable in determining the texture of the teeth and what the bass has been eating... WHO KNOWS!

Your theory makes sense if it's true that crawfish shells dull bass' teeth, but wouldn't sharper teeth also be an advantage gripping crawfish?
Also, which ones are the "gripper" teeth? |

My favorite is when the claw is sticking out. Makes it a whole lot easier to figure out what they're biting. I like the theory PNJ. I'll have to test it out.

I have observed bass feeding on crawfish in the BPS tanks and at the Minnow Bucket aquarium on Lake Fork (we would catch them and take them to the aquarium just to watch the bass eat them).
Every craw I have ever see a bass eat, the bass would quickly inhale the craw then spit it back out. This would cause the crawfish to spin around. The bass would then suck the crawfish in tail first and swallow it whole. I've watched smallmouth bass butt them with their mouth closed and knock them up off the bottom then do the same thing. None that I've ever observed ever touched the lips or teeth. Sorry, PNJ, I've got weigh in in favor of old age on the larger bass. Until they reach a point of slowed or no more growth they continue producing teeth along with bigger lips. ![]()

Bob, Keep an open mind and observe the gripper teeth when you are catching fish on a particular pattern.
![]() ![]() Of course there has to be a transition period when they switch, and some of the biggest bass I have caught had sharp gripper teeth.I know they were feeding on baitfish, I could see the bait popping out of the water in the creek, but they still took the jig I pitched in front of them. There are no rules carved in stone, its just something to note and it may very well boat a few more fish the days the bite is real slow. ![]() |

It sure seems like on the days you have very active fish and lip em all day long, the griper teeth sure do feel sharper...of course going to work the next day and brag about your "bass thumb" is pretty sweet!

![]() About the only way I guess I'll know is if I catch them on a craw imitating bait then check to see if thier teeth are dull when I lip them (to see if they have been eating craws before I caught them). ![]()

For any scientific theory to be proved, you need to put it up against competing ideas and theories.
Here is mine. What if fish exhibit gripper teeth when they get cold. You know, kinda like when girls are cold and their...well....nevermind. Haha.
