Talking Casting the drop shot rig!!!

I have real shallow area's that i don't trust using the boat on the river. But i can cast into them from my boat. What'z your opinion on casting this bait. As i say this i'm thinking i may need to use no snag sinkers to accomplish this.

Default Casting a drop shot in shallow water?

Do it! It works just fine. If you fish a lot of grassy areas, go with the cylindrical weight for fewer hangups.

I don't know why so many people think this rig isn't castable. Go for it but make sure your DS set up can handle to cover. Ie, if the cover is heavy, the typical 6# test line isn't ideal. If it is grassy and small EWG style hook t-rigged weedless is far more convenient that the regular nose-hooked lure with the hook's tip exposed.

Best of luck!

The only time I've seen a problem casting a drop shot is when people try to snap cast it. It's better to use a long smooth sidearm or 3/4 cast. imho

Thanx guy!!! I will try it. I nevor casted it because i've always thaught of it as a vertical presentation from the boat deck. What do think about snagless sinkers on this rig

Been casting it from when I first started using it. WSA is correct about the easy cast-just use a heavier weight for more distance.

I don't get hung up that often using a cyllindrical weight. Round ds weights are a snag magnet.

Snap Cast! Now that would be something I'd have to see with a DS! The only thing I ever snap cast is either close-up pitching or fly fishing...

Ditto RB on the weight choice, I like cylindrical weights too.
In addition to the cast that WSA mentioned, my favorite cast is to "pitch" the DS much like you would a bait caster. With a little practice you will be able to get it out there pretty far, but also be able to effectively fish boat docks and low hanging areas with the DS (works extremely well!)!

So true. Pitching is an awesome way to cast a DS rig. The weights I prefer to use if I can find them are the tear drop shape. These are not the same as the ones made by owner that look like a hershey's kiss. Cylindricals are a very close second.

Pitch it - you'll be amazed the distance you can get with a little practice!

Personally, I don't think I would like those weights. One of the things I like about the drop shot is the ability to determine bottom texture (soft, hard, rocks, etc). That weight would probably be better suited for bouncing a Walleye offering along at a fast drift.
But then again, I have never tried it and know no one who has so it might work just fine!

Anyone remember those bottom bounce weights ? there were a rubber ball type weight that easily walked along the bottom and rarely snagged up because of the diameter of the weight.I haven't seen them in a few years, walleye fishermen used them alot.P N J
