Swimbait question
I have heard a lot of praise lately about swimbaits, and would really like to try them. Does anyone have any suggestions for what kind of swimbaits a newbie fisherman should try?
Also, how do you rig them (what hooks do I need to buy, weightless, etc)and how do you fish them? I am assuming a slow retrieve with pauses and jerks. Any help and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, this bait would be a new venture for me.

here are a few that won't break the bank like a lot of swimbaits can.
http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...=SearchResults http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...=SearchResults http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...=SearchResults or if you would rather go with the boddies that you rig on a weighted hook: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...=SearchResults http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...=SearchResults be sure to look at the weight of the bait when you buy, you will want a lot of rod for those heavy suckers.

Check out Storm swimbaits-widely available, inexpensive, and best of all they work.

Closest one to me is in Macon, about an hour away. But Macon is the closest bass pro shops, so maybe I will try and find them if I don't see anything I like at BPS. Thanks.

Hard plastic baits are tied on just like plugs. Soft plastics will vary on rigging based on the type bait you have. I still stick with the tried in true Sassy Shad. You rig them to a jig just like a grub. I use 4 inchers. I got a hell of a deal on the chartruse metal flake shad at my local bait shop at 10 cents a piece. 3.00 of them will last for the year on the mighty MO. This color slays them bass on the river.

when you get the swimbaits, you should try throwing them down the edges of barges that are stationary by the bank. me and my dad won a tournament off of em this year. they also work really well on docks and bridges.

Very soon the market will be flooded with "swimbaits". Berkley, Storm, and others will be ripping off the original Basstrix "swimbait" which is not like the large swimbaits that originated in CA. There are multiple Basstrix baits in many sizes from 2" to 6" and are very good looking baits. Unfortunately the ones being used in bass tournaments are being horded due to their small production and sold on ebay for 4 or 5x's their original cost.
Other similar swimbaits are Poor Boy's Silly Bunny/Rabbit and Money$Minnow (two examples that I have in front of me). Both of these baits don't have the hollow body that Basstrix have. These baits have weighted extra wide gapped hooks and screws that attach to the nose of the bait. Swim the baits or lift and drop the baits along the bottom. |
