I don't fish in the winter, but I wouldn't hesitate to try a topwater if other stuff wasn't working, but it wouldn't be my first choice. A lot of fish have been caught when the fisherman does something unconventional, or "thinking outside the box."

I have tried a buzzbait here in Pa in Feb. No luck. This year I plan on getting out asap, weather permitting. I will try again. I will try other baits besides buzzbaits. I've read many times where they will hit a topwater but won't believe it till it works for me. I guess it is a hit or miss or conditions have to be just right.

they will hit topwater year round. i have caught a lot of fish on a spook in the winter.

I almost always have a topwater tied on, usually a Spook. I fish them almost year round. If the water is REAL cold, then I will not fish them, not because they won't catch fish then, they will, but because I don't have the patience to let them sit still long enough in cold water.

Now, that being said, I live in South Texas and our winters are probably milder than what yours are.

That my friend depends greatly on who you ask and where that person lives.

I do use topwaters during the "winter".

i never throw topwater in the winter, but ive heard of some people that had their best day theyve ever had on a buzzbait when it was snowing.

Topwater is one of those lures that can work anytime of the year.

I think the reason people exchew the throwing of topwater lures is because part of theirffectiveness is derived from the fact that they are a good reaction bait. Reaction lures tend to not work well in the winter, so people kinda put them away.

But topwaters also work because they simulate a dying baitfish. Dying baitfish are so attractive to bass that it doesnt matter how cold it is, its an easy meal.

all my baits seem to be top water this week,and if I catch one tha can bust through the ice it will be a keeper

I think it's all relative to water temperature..here in the northeast bass rarely hit a topwater in cold water until the water temp comes up to around 45...winter bass here won't move for anything unless it passes right by their nose

Honestly, at least here, there is always a few fish near the surface (or willing to come to the surface). You can use top-waters year round, particularly spooks and poppers, but, they're not always very productive baits.

I have also had good success throwin top water in the winter. I have caught fish on spooks, buzzbaits, and pop-rs. Also many times you will catch a mixed bad around here of largemouths and striper.
