Default I hate when hooks rust

I remember seeing an ad for like a stone or something that you put in your tacklebox that keeps hooks from rusting. Does anyone know what product I'm talking about?

I just threw out a lot of rusted hooks, jigs, and spinnerbaits. It's gonna cost me about $75 to replace it all.

Might want to make sure your tetnus shot is up to date. They're good for 10 years though ,if I remember correctly.

Sorry for your loss.I did the same thing years ago, now I only keep a smaller amount in the tackle pack. The rest stays home to refill as needed.

I have never heard of anything to prevent rust and corrosion, except for the electronic device they sucker you into at a car dealership.I refused to pay for it, it wasn't anything I agreed to when purchasing the car. They left it on the car, but weren't too happy about it.It goes to show you they still made money on the deal after all was said and done. I wonder if you could install it in a boat locker and would it work ? Ivan

You can buy little strips at BPS or Academy that go in the boxes and are more convenient than the stones or use the lil packages that are in shoe boxes and beef jerky bags. I always switch mine out every year anyways.

If it is true and it works let us know. I wonder how it would work. Rust can perfrom in the absence of moisture or water. Iron only needs Oxygen to form so I wonder how such a product would work. Oxygen is everywhere.

I feel for your loss. Some of my cranks that have never even touched water that I've had for sometime acquired rust. Arrrgh!

While rust can and does form in the absence of water, by ensuring a moisture free environment, you will significantly retard the formation of rust. Aside from oil soaks, paints, etc. there is no reliable way to keep oxygen out of a tackle box. Just get or make some desiccant packets, and you should be good to go. I love colloidal sillica... stuff is cool.

It don't taste very good. Thought one was a smashed moon pie in the bottom of my tackle pack.I tore it open and emptied the contents in my mouth and washed her down with a can of warm rootbeer. Warm rootbeer and silica packets don't mix well, unless your looking to chum the water.

LL, next time you are in Best Buy or someplace like that ask the warehouse guys if they have some laying around. They are packed in many different items to keep moisture at a minimum.

Or, go to a craft store, and look for the stuff that you use to dry flowers. You can package it in coffee filter paper, and make them custom sized for cheap. Or, if you don't mind the stuff laying loose in yer boxes, you can sprinkle it in. It is non-toxic after all. Biggest health risks with it are inhaling or ingesting. Because it sucks up 1000% it's weight in water, it can dehydrate your internals right quick.

i had that problem a couple of years ago, and since then i found something on the web. I put some toothpicks in the compartments by the hooks and the toothpick absorbs the moisture... seemed to work very well for me.

it is the simple things that work the best,,you may also want to try Q-tips,like tooth picks there cheap and ya get a bunch, instead of throwing those hooks out you may want to try some navel jelly and scotch brite pads,,may save some of 'em

Cut the center out of a Huggy diaper and put in in the bottom of of your box/bag. It has a super absorbent material that will keep your stuff dry. This is no joke folks, I use them in my boat, box/bags and they work... Carpy

Good advice, guys. I'll put Q-tips and toothpicks in my diapers from now on.

Seriously, Q-tips sound like they make work the best - thanks.

Thanks, Reb! But what exactly should I ask for? Colloidal silica or just silica?

I learned this little trick a few years back and it has worked flawlessly for me over the years. Drill a couple 1/8 holes in the bottom of your 3600/3700 individual tackle slots. This will allow air to circulate in your trays and allow any moisture that is trapped to escape.
