Hey guys, I am hoping to improve on my lipless crankbait fishing this season, and have a few questions... What length and action of rod do you prefer for lipless cranks, and what pound of line do you use when throwing them? Also, what is your opinion of the Red Eye Shad by Strike King? I was thinking of trying some but was just wondering what your opinions were first. Thanks
Ryan

ok now for the strike king red eye shad.. before you buy them look at the back. it will say made in..one of two places costa rica or mexico..buy the costa rica one avoid buying the made in mexico ones.. the paint jobs are better longer lasting on the costa rica made baits. strike king needs to seriously take a long hard look at the quality of there mexican made baits.. as lipless baits go strike kings do have decent hooks and are a loud rattler..i have several baits that i use all the time. all of them were repainted by carolina chip-at least his paint jobs last for years- zooker

i throw my lipless crankbaits on either a 7' mh with a 6.4:1 reel or a 6'6" medium rod with a 6.3:1 reel. but i think i will start throwing them some on a 7.1:1 reel as well.

7' medium action soft tip, HS reel, 12-15 # line for the 1/4oz and lighter (easier to cast), 7' MH rod with 15 to 17 # for the 1/2 oz and 3/4 oz. Baits and 7' MH stick and 20# for the 1 oz rattle traps (when in Texas, I definitely threw them on Fork and Big Sam in Early spring).

I use 6'6" MH crankin' rod modifed from the tip to a 6'3" with 6.3:1 curado usually with 15 lb. test. Since then I've really up'd the % for successfully landing the fish I hook up with.

I love traps. You really need 2 rods if your going to downsize to 1/4 oz. traps and 1/2oz+ traps.Do not go above 10 lb test for the 1/4 oz. traps and run 15-20 lb on the bigger traps.
For reel I want a medium speed line retreive. You have to crank the traps to deflect off from something in order to 1 be in the right strike zone 2. provoke them to strike If that trap isn't ticking something your in for a long day of boring fishing with one exception .Spring time you can burn a trap through open water at a fast retreive and get hammered like it got ran over by a freight train. ![]()
