Me & the soon-to-be Mrs Fish..(yes my last name is really "Fish")..are thinkin' of moving to the NC/SC area in the next year, we are in our late 20's and both have professional careers. She is a nurse and can basically get a job anywhere/anytime, I on the otherhand will be selling my business within the next year and am going to get into EMS/EMT work shortly. I don't know anything about these two states, just know that we want a change from the winters and fuel costs (heating oil is 4.00/gal). To put this in perspective; we have a 250 gallon tank and fill it about 4x a winter...it's roughly $4,000 before service charges..OUCH! Also sick of the sodium chloride rusting out our vehicles every 3 years, not to mention the headache of dealing with the SNOW! I would love to hear your feedback about these states and specific areas that I should check out...we don't need to be near the coast, but GOD love ya if you can get me close to some good Bass fishin'

raleigh-durham,greensboro,winston-salem,charlotte,columbia,greenville, and charleston are the big citys in nc/sc region. raleigh and durham are some of the best medical centers found on the east coast.. please note the closer to the ocean you get in nc the crappier the bass fishing is. we got a whole 4" of snow here in the triad last winter.-you should have seen the rednecks panic- lol....

i've been considering the move there myself but mostly the myrtle beach area because i have some family there , but with the careers you guys have you should be alright anywhere you choose , i was kicking around the idea of opening a clothing store down there but have heard that most of the their business is tourist based . but good luck if you do it's a great area and i feel your pain about winter man i'm in ct just a couple hours south of you .

![]() He's right though, People around here freak when there's a little snow cause it don't happen that often. And yup, there's UNC hospital, Duke hospital and a slew of specialty medical offices, research etc all around raleigh, duram, and chapel hill. there's a few lakes within reasonable driving. And if you're good at bs'ing with the locals you can find some nice farm ponds. The coast isn't too far if you want to do some saltwater fishing. Gotta warn ya though, the summers here can be right humid. And stay off the roads in the snow cause we rednecks do not know how to drive in it, although most of the snow and ice related wrecks I've seen involved a yankee that knew how to drive in it like zook. ![]() ![]() ![]() lol |

My wife and I will probably end up moving next spring also and it depends on where she finds a job after finishing school. I am pushing her towards NC. I have been to "most" states and that is my favorite: mountains (big hills) in the west, lakes in the middle, and the coast in the east. My brother moved there 3 years ago and loves it.
I know it gets hot, but not quite like Florida and after a year or two you will adjust. |

you should also try out ashville, nc. have a brother in law there and they love it. and you'll be close to 4 states that have the best fisheries around. and you could make a trip to ol bama in a matter of about 6 hours. in bama we didn't get any snow, just a couple of icey roads for a few hours, hahaha. the highway crews were all over the place spreading sand. no salt or nuthing going on our tar and gravel roads...... got enough potholes (and potheads) as it is.

I remember a couple years ago that sc got hit with a freak ice storm closed the state down for like 3 days or something anyhow my dad was at my grandparents and could not understand how nobody was out driving , i guess that is part of being from the north thinking that you have been dealing with ice and snow for ever and thinking you have the ability to drive in it .

The thing that really gets me about it snowing here is the people that flock to the grocery stores. I use to work in them, and we wanted to shoot the weather man everytime he mentioned snow. They load up on milk and bread like they'll be snowed in for a month. I've never seen a snow, with maybe the exception of the mountains and northern counties, last on the ground more than a couple days. And those few times it does happen is maybe, just maybe, once a decade. They call our NC weather sub-tropic, not sub-artic. It usually snows early in the morning and is gone by that evening.

This is a photo that came out of our local newspaper..April 1st!! The snow is gone now, but there's been a lot of flooding issues. Luckily no-one that's from Maine really worries about the snow, we all own atleast one 4x4 and plan accordingly. Before big storms I check our heating oil and plan on getting up early to take the misses to work, our second vehicle is a civic and has a rough time getting out of the driveway after a 12-18" storm. Driving in snow is not that difficult, just assume that the roads are ice-rinks and leave yourself plenty of time & space to come to a stop...and SLOW DOWN!
Folks from the south driving in a snow storm look at one another and say "Can you believe this sh*t!" Folks from Maine driving in a snow storm say "hold my beer and watch this sh*t!" ![]()

part of the problem here is they have no tire regulations like the northern states do..they drive them till they blow-no joke- then get new tires. yeah 60+ on an interstate with bald azz tires will be one of those "as seen on tv" wrecks.. if ya come down sell your snow blower and buy a NEW lawn mower. we mow grass march thru december here.. this is the spring bloom here..fall bloom in october this climbing rose bush will be just under the eves ![]() zooker

If NC is humid then go to Lousianna. Came up here on leave and was told that it was really humid, I felt like wearing a jacket in the middle of summer.
It ain't that humid here. Just seems that way if you've never been in real humidity.

Lived around Shaw AFB in S.C. when I was in still. Had some land with my own pond probably about 300x300 yards. I never stocked a damn thing in that pond and took out most of the turtles with a 22 while they were sunning themselves. Always caught a ton of great sized LM out of that pond..I don't think I remember a day without a bite. Used to float it in a little jon boat....just tear them up from end to end day in and day out. That was some of the best fishing I've ever had. Then I rotated back to Illinois after I was out and well the fishing heres a damn joke....along with most everything else...we've started calling it commienois
